I'm pretty sure they don't - especially on the Pacific routes - a lot of the time you cant even buy F or J seats they go out pretty full

Qantas very own staff have to work for QF for 7 years before they can purchase business class...and I believe only select groups of staff can purchase First... I think it may just be management and flight crew. Cabin crew, I don't think can.
In any case, there are huge chunks of QF's own staff that can't use this product unless they pay full price like everybody else...so in all honesty, you've got jack all chance of getting it as an outsider unless you happen to know somebody with the ability in QF to a decision. (try station manager/Purser etc - and even then, on the pacific routes...good luck finding an empty First or Business class seat.)

I'd suggest you try Air NZ.... I think STAR alliance have some more common rules on these things?

Yeah chances arent good, and it would be a bit unfair especially when us AKL base cant even duty pax in J class.

Yeah only pilots and executive level staff can purchase/upgrade to First.

However I believe any QF staff can purchase an upgrade to Domestic First & Business Class (where available, of course), not sure about other airlines' staff.

... as far as I have understand non-rev rules are completely different issue and has no reflections to alliances.

Colleague of mine was refused from QF flight because Y was full - there was still seats in C but it was a no go for an upgrade! Apparently QF staff got a Y-seat because rev-pax was upgraded.

Recently my airline as well has stopped upgrading of non-rev pax on long haul flights. But I always buy C-class ticket anyway Big grin

The short answer is no. QF don't upgrade non-rev staff who don't have the correct duty travel code, and will leave you behind if Y is full and they don't upgrade any revenue pax to J or F. As a staff member of five years, I was left behind once or twice, and that was with a high priority code.

Also be careful on the US/Australia runs, as last minute freight is often worth far more than a couple of non-rev pax, so even with seats open, they can sometimes elect to take the freight instead. It becomes a weight vs profit issue basically.
