DL>FL Int-dom Transfer ATL - 90 Mins?

Thu May 29, 2008 10:59 am

I have the following flights booked for 3 weeks time, and I'm not sure how sensible the connection is:

DL 104 J 19JUN GRUATL 2255 0745+1
FL 090 A 20JUN ATLRDU 0915 1037

Basically I have 90 minutes to clear immigration, customs, recheck my bag (I will have hold luggage, unavoidably), clear security again and get to my FL gate. Does this sound reasonable ?

- Do DL/FL have a baggage agreement - can DL tag my bags GRU-ATL-RDU ? I know I have to collect the bags at ATL and clear customs, but normally you just put your bags back on the belt and off they go, if they are tagged through to your connecting flight.

- If DL cannot tag my bags through, will FL have a desk at international transfer to check my bags, or will I have to go all the way out to the check-in concourse to drop it off with FL ? If so then I'm screwed, I guess.

- How busy will Immigration be at ATL at 0745 ? There are flights due in around then from GRU, GIG, JNB but the other Latam flights get in a bit later, around 0900.

I want to stay on the FL flight if possible (it's a 717, never been on one of those) but if the connection is going to be difficult, I'll switch the DL flight to RDU at 0955.

Any advice, suggestions welcome.

JG,

I've never connect international via ATL, but I believe with 90 minutes you should be fine, even if you have to recheck your bags with FL. ATL is a very easy airport to navigate between connecting flights.

BTW - I'll be on a FL 717 next week, PHF-ATL and return. My first 717 flights. What brings you to RDU?

Family vacation - my brother lives in RDU, we're going to the Outer Banks to a beach house for a week.

Outer Banks

Great places down there - we honeymooned in Kill Devil Hills, and go down there frequently. Last month we spent a week on Okracoke Island.

I'm only about 90 minutes from there up in the Hampton Roads area. If you get up this way, drop a line, and I'll buy you a beer - or three.  bigthumbsup

You're going to be competing with other South American red-eye flights arriving in the AM, although it does appear they are fairly well spread out:

Delta 110 from EZE arrives ATL at 5:55 AM
Delta 331 from GYE/UIO arrives ATL at 6:09 AM
Delta 146 from SCL arrives ATL at 6:30 AM
Delta 150 from GRU arrives ATL at 7:45 AM
Delta 305 from JNB/DKR arrives ATL at 8:05 AM
Delta 210 from GIG arrives ATL at 8:10 AM
Delta 350 from LIM arrives ATL at 8:50 AM

These are all the international red-eyes I could locate arriving into ATL in the AM. It's a busy time, but it should flow pretty quickly.

DL and FL probably do not have an interline agreement mainly because they are competitors at ATL. It's going to be a pain to have to check-in again, but that's based on your choice of airlines.

90 minutes might be enough. You'll be travelling a lot. Inbound international at ATL is a long drawn out process...

- get off the plane terminal E
- clear immigrations (line)
- terminal E baggage claim (wait for checked bags)
- clear customs (short line)
- surrender bags again
- clear security (line)

- train to baggage claim at the other end of the airport (ride)
- get bags again at south baggage claim (wait for checked bags)
- check-in at north check-in for FL (line)
- re-enter secure zone (line)

- train to terminal C (ride)
- walk to gate

If you can get checked-in through to RDU you won't have to claim them the SECOND time. You still need to have them with you when you go through customs. This will save you the hassle of taking the train to the other end of the airport, though, to check back in and go through security again. You'll be able to go straight to terminal C.

I kinda doubt DL does interline with FL, though. If that's the case, then the only way you can avoid all that is by switching your flight.

Also keep in mind on your return trip you'll need to get in line at DL international check-in in ATL, which is annoyingly long.

I'd feel better with 2 hours than 90 minutes. But you might get lucky.

Those morning arrivals tend to feature very short trips through immigration and customs. It's certainly possible to be back through security and on the train within 30 minutes. But if DL and FL do not have a baggage agreement, you're looking at the equivalent of arriving at the airport 60 minutes before a flight, and I would not recommend that at ATL. If they do have a baggage agreement, it's easily doable (though, obviously, things happen sometimes). If not, I wouldn't try it.

Thanks for the info - very useful. Re going back, I won't be leaving from ATL again, I'll be going via JFK to BKK - whole other mission, transfer from T8 to T4 at JFK, oh joy. But I have 4 hours, so it should be OK.

Yeah, you'll be screwed if you can't check directly onto FL from GRU.

Just a quick trip on the AirTrain - make sure you get on the inner loop (terminals only) and not the outer loop (takes you out to Jamaica or Howard Beach). Alternatively, if you want a nice view of the airport, do take the outer loop to Federal Circle, and then get back on the train going the other way. You'll get to see some of the cargo areas and Terminals 1, 2 and 3. There are some nice views of the ramps along the way.

Although this posting is referring to reaccomodating passengers from canceled flights, it makes it sound like DL and FL do not interline bags.

I'm switch the ATL-RDU flight to DL then - I can't be arsed with this. The 717 will have to wait.

Thanks everyone.
