My questions are:
- is Finnair long-haul really that bad / has it become that bad in recent years?
- is the MD11 economy seat really that terrible?
- is the food really inedible?
- does the service really suck so badly?
Not too shabby at all! My girlfriend lived in Finland for about 8 months and I flew probably about 10 r/t's...and I'm still alive! The service is pleasant.... We had a flight from ORD
in F, and that service was average, but in comparison, I would say Finnair's Y service was a bit better than AA
's domestic F.
I'm 6'4", and, while I wouldn't have enough room to cut my toenails or do those foot dance things the recommend (on a few flights with them, the FA
's actually demonstrated how to do them!) so that you don't get DVT
, it's bearable. If you can stand a CRJ for 2 hours, you can do a longhaul on Finnair's MD11. Try to get a seat in the 1st economy cabin..21/22 are great. The legroom is nothing to write home about, but it isn't so bad that I have to remove the magazines and such from the seat pocket in front of me like I have to do on AirTran!
Food: So many fliers make a huge deal about airline food being the worst thing ever, etc.... but really, I think they like to hear themselves complain. It's not a gourmet 5 course meal, but it's much better than any frozen dinner you could find on land.
When it comes to saving $$ on tickets, if I'm traveling by myself, I always look at the opportunity cost: What could I do with the $250 I save by going on an airline with a bit less legroom? I figure I would get much more out of, say, a meal at a really fancy restaurant with the gf for that amount of money than I would from that extra inch of legroom for 8 hours. Likewise, I started using Y when I'm by myself as much as I could, and literally saved enough money over the past 2 years to pay cash for my dream car...
, I'm really glad that I make a habit of copy/pasting long replies into notepad before I hit post...because I had all this typed up and A.net ate my post since your OP was moved to the Polls forum!)
