Around The World In The Least # Of Segments

Tue Jul 08, 2008 1:28 am

What is the least number of segments that, if put together, would get you around the world. For me it is 3. They are:

ATL-DXB -> DL 8
DXB-ICN -> KE 952
ICN-ATL -> KE 035

Several rules to follow:

1. All filghts must be in the same direction. Either east or west
2. You must start and end at your hometown airport.
3. All flights do not have to be taken on the same trip.

This is NOT offically an "around the world" flight. To be around the world according to FAI rules you have to cross the equator TWICE to qualify.

Try NZ: AKL-LAX-LHR-HKG-AKL OR QF/BA/AA: SYD/MEL-LAX-LHR-(SIN/BKK/HKG)-SYD/MEL.

All I said was "around the world". I said nothing about meeting any official rules or guidelines.

I am in awe of, and, very impresed with, your vast knowledge on the subject. I bow to your expertise. In case you have not figured it out yet - I am a smart ass!!

I could make it in 3 legs as well... although this will not qualify the for the "real" round the world trip...

HEL-NRT AY073/08JUL 1720 0855+1 (09:35 hours)
NRT-JFK JL006/09JUL 1100 1045 (12:45hours)
JFK-HEL AY006/09JUL 1745 0850+1 (08:05 hours)
...

HEL-HEL time 39:30 hours - and it's really possible
I think I will try sometimes

For the "real" round the world trip I could take
HEL-BKK/ICN/NRT/HKG-AKL-LHR-HEL or
HEL-BKK/ICN/NRT/HKG-SYD-JFK-HEL

EWR-SIN

You'd have to go the other way, as SIN-EWR and EWR-SIN both go east-bound.

Along the same lines...

Quoting YULYMX (Reply 6):
EWR-SIN
SIN-LHR
SIN-EWR

No need to stop in LHR. Can just do SIN-EWR-SIN.

For me, I'm closest to EWR so it's also EWR-SIN-EWR, though if I used JFK I'd probably do JFK-DXB-HKG-JFK

Not always. Depending on winds, I believe they frequently use the polar route from EWR to SIN where they go almost due north over the North Pole and down across Russia and China. That would hardly qualify as around the world.

Out of BOS -

BA BOS-LHR / BA LHR-NRT / AA NRT-ORD / AA ORD-BOS

Don't think it can be done on 3 legs at all

Out of MHT -

CO MHT-EWR / CO EWR-BOM / CX BOM-HKG / CO HKG-EWR / CO EWR-BOS

Out of LAS -

KE LAS-ICN / KE ICN-LHR / BA LHR-MAN / BD MAN-LAS
If you count the same city, you can knock it down to three: KE LAS-ICN / KE ICN-LHR / VS LGW-LAS (change airports in London).

From HAN you need 4.
HAN-CDG on VN
CDG-ORD on AA
ORD-NRT on AA
NRT-HAN on VN

If I want to cross the equator I need 5:
HAN-SGN on VN
SGN-SYD on VN
SYD-LAX on UA
LAX-FRA on UA
FRA-HAN on VN

PHX would be boring; LAX though is my secondary home airport and I would mix it up and go:

LAX-FRA LH
FRA-CAN LH
CAN-LAX CZ

Hello everyone,

What about: KE GRU-ICN (only 1 flight number for the entire journey, although it stops in LAX), than, EK ICN-DXB, and the same airline DXB-GRU.

Cannot think of any other way of doing it, the way you proposed, in less segments.

Via Europe, there would be an stop in Asia, than an stop in the US or Canada, and the same going via JNB.

Be safe.

Gilson.

EWR-DEL - CO
DEL-SIN - SQ
SIN-EWR - SQ

Seems like quite a few possiblies with this one, with a bit of imagination and time.

Although I got it down to two flight numbers:

AKL-LHR Flight 2 (stops in LAX)
LHR-AKL Flight 38 (stops in HKG)
You can't cure stupid

I think I want to start a new thread:

Around the World in the MOST Number of Segments in 5 days.
Maybe a budget limit.

or perhaps a way without touching a G-8 or EU nation:

KUL-EZE (MH202 via JNB, CPT)
EZE-SYD (AR1182 via AKL)
SYD-KUL (MH112)

(KUL is about 3 degrees North)

or

AKL-EZE
EZE-CPT
CPT-DXB
DXB-AKL (stops in SYD)

Since there aren't any rules or guidelines would this count?:
GUM-NRT-YVR-LHR-NRT-GUM
At 18487mi that's the definitely going the "short way" around the world. Without the Guam legs its just over 15000 mi.

Perhaps more in keeping with the intent of the thread would be:
GUM-HNL-EWR-LHR-HKG-GUM
Still only 20340mi

Everyone has been giving RTW examples involving the Northern Hemisphere. It's also possible to do it staying south of the equator all the way and using only 3 flights. For example:

MH EZE-JNB (one stop at CPT)
QF JNB-SYD
AR SYD-EZE (one stop at AKL)

Or:

SA GRU-JNB
QF JNB-SYD
LA SYD-SCL (one stop at AKL)
LA SCL-GRU

Not a frequent traveler by any means, but when my father took it, he said he was shocked to find that outwards went over the Pacific but return was over Europe. Thats where I got it from

Official mode: ZRH-SIN SQ, SIN-AKL SQ, AKL-LAX NZ, LAX-ZRH LX, so 4 legs  Smile
