Carry Your Own Luggage On

With Ryanair pushing only hand luggage flights. Maybe it could be a thing of the distant future pax carrying on their own hold luggage/cases on?

The next generation of A320s & 737 could be wide (and high)-bodied aircraft designed with steps than go in at hold level then steps up into the cabin. I am sure this was a feature in some Ilyushin or Tupolev aircraft in the past?

It could be cost effective? Or maybe this is just a daft idea?

With airlines charging for checked bags, more people will be carrying on their bags. I never check bags since I like to know where they are. Thanks for the idea.

It was a design feature of the Il-86, and once it got into service they realised why it was such a bad logistical idea - passengers took far too long to stack their own bags, didn't stack them compactly, would try and then get stuff out of them whilst in cruise, and then cause chaos in the utter free for all at the destination. Not to mention the fact that it was a huge security breach, which I believe was the reason why it was finally banned after a few years.

Other problems they found was that the stairs took up a lot of space which could have been used for cargo, whilst adding a lot of weight and bulk to the airframe. Nevertheless, it's a pretty cool experience to board via them Big grin
