Most Well Defended Hub In The US

Wed Aug 06, 2008 5:15 am

My guess would be MSP or DFW, but I could be wrong. What hub is defended the best from competition?

MSP - No WN, not much of a presence from other LCC's, save for maybe Sun Country.

ATL- DL's fortress hub, but also a pretty big showing from FL

DFW- Are you counting airports alone or cities as a whole?? If just airports, DFW is probably the winner. If cities as a whole, WN has a big operation out of DAL.

CVG- While not a big hub, very little showing from LCC's and no other major airports in close proximity.

I think it's a tie between DFW and MSP - ATL has enough traffic from other airlines, both international and domestic, that can rely on O&D traffic to sustain it.

AA at DFW is pretty vicious, and they have shown they will compete with every carrier for the north Texas market; however, AA has never threatened to move away from the area. On the other hand, Minnesotans have joked for years that one does not EVER make a joke about NW, as "big brother is listening".

While both airlines have worked very hard to build up relationships with their respective areas, I would say that MSP is the more well defended as NW constantly protects it from "perceived threats" by both airlines AND any talk in the land of 10,000 lakes of the forbidden words - Southwest Airlines

DFW, hands down.
It's bigger than other well defended hubs, like Charlotte.
And, while DL has FL at ATL, and NW has SY at MSP, AA has.... themselves at DFW. And no, Love Field does NOT compete, regardless of what either carrier wishes us to believe (which changes every time they argue over it anyway).

I mean, AA is in nearly ALL terminals.

What about CO at IAH? I know they move over 88% of the passengers there.

It's clearly Charlotte. US Airways has every gate in the B, C, D, and E concourses, save for jetBlue at D6 and Star Alliance partner Lufthansa using D12 for one flight a day.

There are only 14 gates (the 2 mentioned in Concourse D plus A1-12 used by everyone else) that aren't used by US Airways in the entire airport.

AirTran: ATL, BWI
American: DFW
AmericanConnection: MIA, STL
American Eagle: ORD, MIA
Continental: EWR
Continental Express: CLE, EWR, IAH
Delta: ATL, SLC
Delta Connection: ATL, CVG, JFK, LGA (ends Sept)
jetBlue: BOS, FLL, JFK
Lufthansa: MUC
Northwest: DTW, MSP
Northwest Airlink: MEM
United: DEN (ends Nov), ORD
United Express: IAD, ORD

The only routes that US Airways doesn't service from CLT that a competitor does are SLC on Delta, which is seasonal, and MUC on Lufthansa, which is codeshare. Only 14 routes are served mainline at all on other carriers.

There are just 2 low-fare competitors, jetBlue and AirTran, serving only 5 destinations combined. Most importantly, Southwest does NOT have a presence, which is something Dallas can't say...Southwest's big operational base at Love Field makes them a competitor to the DFW hub.

I'd have to say CVG - when you discount fellow SkyTeam partners CO and NW, you only have UA, AA and US - all relegated to the worn-out Terminal 2. Even when you include CO/NW, only UA has mainline flights, and it's about 3 a day to ORD - everything else is on an RJ. No LCCs, and everyone has flight schedules that are no better than DL's. I'd say it's easily CVG.

Although now that I'm moving to MSP, I'm having trouble finding a decent fare to many cities - is a lot more expensive than GSO and MHT/BOS. Sun Country isn't much of a threat to NW.

It may be bigger, but IMO, CLT is much more friendlier. Everybody in CLT is soooo friendly. The US employees even say hello as they walk by. The CLT crew is so nice and friendly.

I was waiting at the gate in CLT and I noticed one of the US Airways drivers that drive the cars that carry people throughout the concourses stopped and saw this old man just sitting there. She started to talk to him and made sure he was alright and she put a smile on his face Big grin CLT's crew is very friendly Big grin

Given your word choice and random photo postings (reply 4), I'm going to guess your argument is made out of a personal affinity for US, rather than an objective and unbiased argument.  Wink

MDW for WN. Many airlines tried to compete there but right now its gotta be at least 80% WN.
To actively root against anybody is just low, and I hope karma comes back at you with a vengeance

Friendly isn't exactly what I'm looking for in a hub - I'm looking for efficiency, which I'd say DFW is a lot more efficient than CLT. It's a hike to go B to E in CLT; in DFW, there's SkyTrain, so the most you ever have to walk is by about 8 gates. SkyTrain alone has made DFW my preferred hub to connect in domestically - the terminals (save Terminal D) aren't anything special, but I can make it from one side of the airport to the other in about 5-7 minutes.

ANC for AS, at this point there has to be less than 3 open gates right now in ANC. Plus they own all the gates and/or terminals they fly to in the state

Man, I think we might have a winner!!  bigthumbsup

Unless of course we count cargo, there are a few big operations out of ANC - NWA Cargo comes to mind. They still have something like 13-14x 742F's all based out of ANC.

I think its gotta be DFW. I'm not a huge AA fan, but they have a very impressive stranglehold of DFW.
