Best Spotting Airports In US

Fri Aug 01, 2008 3:35 am

I was wondering where the best airports for spotting are in the US? I can non-rev on DL anywhere I want and I want to see some heavies. I want somewhere where I can stay on airport property such as a good parking garage viewing area like TPA has or something of the sort.

LAX and PHX come immediately to mind.

I've been told IAH has a good parking garage. Lots and lots of CO, but you will get to see some exotic heavies. The Grand Hyatt at DFW has some amazing views from the rooms facing west. Lots and lots of AA (even more than IAH for CO), but some pretty cool birds as well. As mentioned earlier, though, LAX is definitely a winner for you. You can practically walk down to the In N Out, and you've got a ridiculous amount of heavies landing on 24R.

Clarify what you mean by airport property, though? There aren't any requirements to stay inside security, correct?

Good luck, and have fun!

Absolutely right. There are two garages. I suggest the D/E garage, 8th floor, where, if you are there from 2pm-4pm, you are overlooking KLM 744, AF 772, 2 X BA 772 which will be switched to 744s in November, LH 744. Then from 4pm-6pm there is the EK 77L. At 6pm-8pm, EK departs, AF A332 arrives, Privatair 737 nonstop from AMS arrives, and in October, SQ 773 from Moscow and Singapore will be retimed to arrive during daylight hours in the evening. Right now SQ arrives at 9:30pm and departs at midnight. Edit--SQ changes its times effective today!

On the other side of this garage is CO's Terminal E with 753s, 764s, and 772s among others.
I do enjoy IAH. If you want to visit, go to www.houstonspotters.net

The A/B garage is good too, but you're over Co Express, and the random airlines at Terminal A like UA, AA, DL, F9, etc.

The north part of both garages has a good view of runway 26L 8R. The A/B garage has a better view of departure runways 15LR as well.

There's my    on Houston!

There are always folks spotting in the garages. If you plan to hang out for a long time, call the police there in advance to let them know you are there and they won't bother you. Info is on the linked website. Once I was there and ran into a group of guys from Manchester, UK that were on a "spotting holiday"

To see heavy jets, LAX and JFK and SFO are good. The garages at SFO are decent. LAX has the famous In-N-Out burger which I haven't done yet. JFK is sort of hard to see everything but you can ride the train and get some good views. JFK is definitely the most international airport in the US so you need to go there.

If you're wanting to get off the mainland, SJU's a great airport for spotting. They even have a dedicated viewing area off Rwy 8 called the Aeroparque.

I just don't want to have to hail a cab to get to a good spot. IAH sounds like an awesome airport, so i'll have to go there very soon. Is there anywhere to look around at ATL? I'm connecting to IND from there so i'll have some time to look around. I'm assuming there isn't, but it's worth a shot.

I think that LAX is the best option as there are many int. airlines flying there as well, the most you will see in IAH is CO CO CO CO , eventhough CO is nice to look at!  Smile

My favorite airports are LAX and JFK !!!!!

MIA used to be my fav. It was the variety of equipment....jet and prop.
Its tightened up a bit since 9-11 but still a good airport to watch and photograph
planes.

SFO has some good spotting along the path by the Marriott. Lots of heavies if you time it right.

No doubt nothing beats MIA in variety of Aircraft. There are still passenger 727s flying to MIA daily along with 732s. You can see alot of older jets and even props from the cargo airlines, even a DC-3 once in a while. And there are alot of different airlines with plenty of heavies and of course alot of AA. JFK and LAX are the two others that come to mind in variety too. They beat MIA with more airlines and heavies but MIA has the older planes coming in daily. Also with MIA you have OPF and FLL close by which are some other good spotting airports.

At MSP there is the Lindbergh Terminal and Humphrey Terminal parking ramps. At the Lindbergh Terminal there is an observation deck at concourse D where you can see different airlines (DL, AA, F9, CO, AC, UA, US) besides NW. At Post Road there is a parking lot where you get good views of planes landing and taking off on runway 12R/30L. The airport dog park at 28th Avenue is a good place to spot planes landing and taking off on the parallel runways and 17/35. During the weekdays at around 4:30 in the evening you can see a FI 752 land and at around 7:30 see the FI 752 takeoff. Other large jets that come to MSP are NW's A333s and 744s and a DHL 762.
It ain't no normal MD80 its a Super 80!

I agree 100%. MIA beats most U.S. airports in Aircraft variety. I have only spotted from inside the Terminals which actually give great views of the Aircraft. Hopefully when I get some time I will try some different locations. The only bad thing about MIA is a lot of the airport is a dump.

TPA is very spotter friendly. The parking garages provide an excellent view of parts of the field. TPA also has several off-airport spotting sites that make for great photography. The TPA Airport Police are also really cool with spotters.
