Aircraft Type You Wish You'd Flown But Never Will

Sat Aug 23, 2008 4:09 am

Tonight, I was watching Chuck Heston's 1972 film "Skyjacked" and it got me thinking...

The aircraft featured in most of the exteriors is N374WA, what I assume to be a Western 707.

I was born in 1979 with my first flight around 1981 or 82. I've flown on an EI 747 and a Delta L-1011... and a host of other aircraft that are no longer in service.

But I never got to fly in a 707, and there is a chance...given my age...that I probably could have flown on one.

My question to you all is what aircraft type that you realistically had the chance to fly on, but never did...and why?

I think there is only one answer to this question: Concorde. I never did because I had no need to fly LHR-JFK and it was a bit expensive to do it just for fun.

You will probably get a lot for the Concorde, myself included. However others that I missed by pure bad luck more than anything else include, Tristar, and Convair 880. I was lucky enough to fly a Convair 990. Add to those would be Russian airliners. When I did fly to the old USSR my flights were all on TU 154's and I so desperately wanted the TU134 at least once and the newer TU204. IL 62 and IL 86. Not out of the question yet but hopes are fading fast. Most others that I wanted to Fly on I have managed to do so.

Concorde (although I did get to go inside the BA Concorde at the Intrepid Museum but they don't seem to be taking good care of it)

MD-11 (there are still carriers flying passenger MD-11s but not too many)
It ain't no normal MD80 its a Super 80!

In 2000 I went to NYC for the first time and the Intrepid was a must see on my agenda. Like you say it's kind of disturbing they don't seem to be taking care of any aircraft at all, although when I went, the concorde was not there yet.

That sucks indeed. And the MD11 of KL is often in Asia. So you should take a trip to HEL with the MD11 and then fly to THR and there you can take the 707 flight and then head to Bangladesh with their DC10 Big grin

I guess Concorde, the DC8 and DC10 will probably remain on my wish-list for ever, as will the TU134, TU154 and IL86.

Fortunately, I've been lucky enough to get the B707, B727 and the MD11 onto my "have flown on" list while they were still available (not that it's impossible to get onto an MD11 these days, but it used to be easier).

Concorde across the Atlantic Ocean in both directions:
Arrving in the U.S. earlier than you had departed in Europe.
Eastbound crossing of the Atlantic Ocean in daylight.

Why I did not take a flight ? It was beyond my finances at that time.

For me the number one choice would be a Caravelle. I would love to fly on one. A BAC 111 and a Trident would be great too.

As far as props are concerned I would want to fly on a Connie or a DC4, 6, or 7.

I would like to fly a TriStar again. If the last time I flew on one I would have known it was going to be the last time I would have taken some photos to remember it by.

Anyone here whining 727, 707, Shorts 360, MD-11, DC-10, Il-62, Tu-134, Super Connie etc. is just not trying hard enough.
You can go to Russia, Iran, Bangladesh, Ecuador, Bolivia, Honduras or Nicaragua and have flights in them. Biman also flies the DC-10 cheaply between Bangkok and Singapore.

My wish list is another story: Caravelle, FH-227, VC-10, Trident, Tu-114, Tu-104, Martin 404 and Concorde. It really sucks I never had a chance or was too young to get on them. Not flying anymore or only military.

There are still small chances I'll manage to log DC-6, DC-7, DC-8, C-46, Il-14, C-130 ever so I won't mention them (yet)...
