7 Hours Layover At DTW? What To Do?

Mon Sep 01, 2008 5:24 pm

Flying NW cattle class without SkyTeam Elite Plus status anymore, therefore w/o lounge access and being subjected to 7 hours layover at DTW how should I cope with it?
Any suggestions how to kill time?
How much pain is clearing the immigration in terms of time?

Sub-question: Are there still problems with NW flight cancellations towards the end of the month?

Can't answer your question about immigration or cancellation, but...

IIRC, NW sells daily lounge passes for something like US$50... aside from that, there are plenty of dining options, and walking end to end and terminal to terminal is a decent way to kill time, as is just enjoying the sights in the tunnel and people watching.

There's also wireless internet access throughout the terminals and you can mooch off of the WorldClubs wireless from a relatively remarkable distance if you're in the right places.

Every time I have travel that includes a connection in DTW (with one exception RIC-DTW-GRR) I've had at least 3 hours between flights and I've escaped with my sanity.

No, that was resolved last summer. (2007)

Seven HOURS???? Where are you coming from and going???!!!???  Wow!

I find it hard to believe that they can not route you a better way. Some friends of my parents were going to Europe this past fall and had a six or seven hour layover going from SDF to CDG.....made one phone call and they were rebooked to a 90 minute connection.

Sadly, the airport is in the middle of nowhere so any local attractions are a good $70 USD cab ride at best. Heck, you have plenty of time to fly to Chicago, take the train to the Loop, shop and fly back!! lol

I cleared immigrations in 20 minutes while arriving at the same time as an Amsterdam flight and some Asian flights.

That was over a year ago now and hasn't happened sense.

Could be the arrival from LHR, which arrives at 12:40 pm, often times it arrives over an hour early. Like today, it arrived 1hr and 7 minutes early.

FRA arrives at 2:00 (today it arrived at 12:58)
AMS arrives at 10:45 am (NW 39) 1:05 pm (NW 67) 3:00 pm (NW 47) 4:00pm (NW 35)

Day passes i believe are $45 to the world clubs. Ride the tram, eat at the sit down National Coney Island, walk around, visit the enormous amount of shops. Etc.

From LHR (well PRG actually) and continuing on to SFO.
Unfortunately I had no control over choosing the itinerary, because there are far better connections via MSP with considerably shorter connection times and even one at the same price LHR-DTW-MSP-SFO, which I'd take if I could because I'd love to get on the NW DC9 serving the DTW-MSP segment. I know they will be around for at least another decade  Wink, but it still would be a nice addition to my "flown on" list

If that is the case on your flight, you might want to see if you can stand by on NW 345.

It leaves DTW at 12:28.

If you've got 7 hours, I recommend taking a 20 minute cab ride to the Henry Ford Museum.

It's got an amazing collection of automobiles on display, including presidential limos and rare, historically-significant cars. It's got trains and locomotives on display, as well as a handful of interesting aircraft.

It's basically a museum of the industrial revolution, and well worth the admission and cab fare.

Leave the airport. There's absolutely nothing to do there AT ALL except maybe see the memorial for the MD-80 crash in 1987. And don't even ask about taking pictures...
