Connecting Flight Question (LGA To JFK)

Sun Sep 07, 2008 10:59 am

Hi everyone...

I am planning a vacation in the US in Jan-Feb 2009. One of the flights I may take lands in LGA at 15:25 (arriving from MIA) and my next flight departs from JFK at 18:15 (to IST). Do you think there is enough time in between? The date is February 1 and it's a Sunday.

Enough time in between for what? Transfer from one airport to the other? A quick peek of Manhattan?

For the bus between LGA and JFK, try this:

It would be easier just to fly into JFK, no?

It will be cutting it a bit close, especially with any connections.

Are you checking luggage? I would advise against it since that way you don't need to hassle with baggage claim at LGA. Also, I'd advise on just getting a cab for the LGA-JFK transfer - yes, it'll be a little bit more expensive ($20-30) but much faster than public transit/NY Airport Shuttle, etc. With that connection, you'll need every minute, so pay a bit more money for efficient transportation.

I'd strongly recommend looking at other options though - such as going into JFK, longer LGA connection, etc.

I don't think you are leaving yourself enough time for this. You have to allow yourself ~30 minutes to get your checked bags (if you have any), ~15 minutes to get a cab to go from LGA to JFK (if there is a backup with people getting cabs), and the ride from LGA to JFK...let's just say that you never know what you are going to find. You are talking about February in New York. Snow and ice is a big possibility, traffic starts building (on a good day) somewhere around 16:00 as people start getting off from work. There was one time that it took 90 minutes for me to get from LGA to JFK because of traffic/accidents/etc.  bomb

I am based at JFK and commute through LGA, so this is something I do all the time.I would be very wary. RJs have turned LaGuardia into a hell, and flights are prone to all sorts of ground stops, holds, etc., especially in late afternoon. It's very unpredictable. If it's a bad weather day, forget it.

Plus, the LGA-JFK transfer can take anywhere form 20 minutes to an hour, depending on traffic.

Even being a Sunday, if you can book an earlier MIA-JFK, considering snow and all possibilities (ground control and ATC delays) you will travel with more comfort.

Will be a sunday, traffic isn't bad LGA to JFK.

While Sunday’s is usually the lightest traffic day, the traffic to JFK in the afternoon is always busy because of all the international departures.

Unless there is an accident or bad weather, the trip from LGA to JFK should take about ½ hour, but being its New York City, you never know what to expect.

Jan-Feb are snow and ice months, all it takes is one accident to tie up the Grand Central Parkway or the Van Wyck Expressway and you could be stuck there for a while.

What ever means of transportation you take, the shuttle bus or a cab will take the same roads, but the bus can not use the parkway, it has to take the side streets to the Van Wyck and it also stops at the Jamaica station of the Long Island Railroad which slows it down even more.

My recommendation, take a taxi. they will know the alternate routes. If the Van Wyck is backed up, they can take the Grand Central Parkway to the Cross Island Parkway right to JFK, the busses can not do this because no commercial traffic is allowed on these parkways, only cars and vans.
