Problems I Had With AF. What Do You Think?

Thu Sep 25, 2008 6:16 am

For months, I have been looking for a good deal to MIA from IST in Jan/Feb 2009. After many mixing and matching and searching, I finally got a good deal with AF which I currently regret. The story is as follows:

I have 40.000 miles with Flying Blue. I found a ticket on AF flying to EWR and coming back from MIA for 756 USD which is a good deal. I bought this ticket mainly because I also knew that I could fly EWR-MIA on CO using my FB miles. However, whenever I tried to book an award ticket, either one way or return with CO, I got the following message:

"For technical reasons, we are currently unable to respond to your request. We apologize for the inconvenience."

On either one way or return options, the system showed me available flights but would no let me book them to which I thought it really was a system problem and I could later do it on the phone. After I booked my long haul flights, I called AF office in IST and I was told that it is not possible to book a one way award ticket on CO. In the meanwhile, I even made hotel arrangements in New Jersey.

The IST office said there is nothing they could do so I called Paris office. They said the same thing. I e-mail FB customer service only to get the same response.

If I had known that I couldn't book a one way CO ticket in advance, I would not have booked my long haul flights to start with. Now I am obliged to pay for a one way ticket between EWR and MIA/FLL.

As a last chance, I asked AF office here if they could at least book me a seat on the upper deck of the 747-400 from MIA (knowing that they have PTVs upstarirs), they said they could not.

I work in the hospitality industry and we never, ever give NO for an answer and at least offer an alternative. I am terribly disappointed with AF and am not planning to fly them again unless I have to.

What do you guys think?

Ah, the marvels of Skyteam in action. basically it seems with them that those airlines just got together, said "let's find ourselves a name" and that's it. I really don't understand what good is this allaince bring to the world of aviation.
what's the deal with not being able to book an award ticket when there is availability in the award classes? I'd use the miles and say goodbye to them.

It seems that the problem is not so much with AF, more with CO not accepting one-way tickets as reward flights. Does this appear to be the case?
As for not allowing seat assignments, perhaps that is due to the (low - it looks like you got a very good deal!) fare class?

I think that is exactly what I will do. I actually like AF but I really do not want to fly them again... I hope that I will never have to although it might be difficult to avoid such a big airline. I can get a return F class ticket for 40000 miles and not use the return flight.

Nope. 3 phone calls to IST office, 1 to Paris, 2 e-mails and absolutely nothing. Not even an apology for the system problem or an alternative.

That is most probably the reason.....

Save those miles for another flight. Flying EWR-MIA oneway for them is a waste, especially as you will pay for the taxes etc anyhow.
Book an ordinary flight with CO online.

This rather brisk response from the Helpdesk / Res'center might be influenced by either language challenges or cultural issues. This is a major challenge when trying to work with multi-national work groups (something I faced in my business life).
