Best Way To Get 18,000 Miles On LH Miles & Mor

Sun Oct 12, 2008 10:58 pm

I just checked my Lufthansa Miles & More account and I need another 17,899 miles to get to the next tier.
What would be the best (cheapest) way to get these miles?
I know one flight FRA-GRU-FRA would be enought if one leg is in C, the other could be Y.
But are there any cheaper options?
Thanks for your replies!

I would suggest that you go to Flyertalk.com and look on the LH board there. You will find all sorts of suggestions for how to get additional miles. The site is focused on FF mileage programs, mileage accumulation and use.

I know AA and UA have credit card offers all the time for more than 18,000 miles. LH does the same.

http://www.lufthansa.com/online/port...am?nodeid=2041625&l=en&cid=1000390

Get the card, buy a round trip, fly it, then cancel the card if you don't like credit cards.

Check to see if there are any "double miles" promotions on new routes. Lufthansa is launching one new long-haul route this winter, Miami-Düsseldorf, and they might have a double miles promotion going on.

From Switzerland and several other countries in Europe LX has a special business class upgrade surchrage applicable on quite a few flights within Europe (certain destinations only). You can add the upgrade surcharge even to the lowest economy class special fare, but you still get the full business class miles (minimum 2000 on even the shortest one way international sector). If you could arrange to do that where a connection was required at ZRH (e.g. from Milan...I think the upgrad also applies from Italy), on a round trip e.g. MXP-ZRH-FRA-ZRH-MIL, you'd get 8000 miles (plus any extra miles if you're already at one of the elite levels). So you would only have to do that twice to get 16000 miles for probably less than 1000 euros depending on the economy class fare used.

This is the relevant information from the LX Switzerland website. The upgrade surcharges are exceptionally low from BSL.
http://www.swiss.com/countries/CH/EN...swiss_business_upgrade_europe.aspx

Or in German:
http://www.swiss.com/countries/CH/DE...swiss_business_upgrade_europe.aspx

You may want to check with LX to confirm whether they do offer anything similar for travel originating in Germany. It does apply from Switzerland to Germany. You'll often find the upgrade surcharge available only on the less popular flight times or on weekends etc, depending on the route.

Question for the OP, are you looking for EQMs (elite qualifying miles) or RDMs (redeemable miles)? I'm guessing EQMs based on looking to attain the next tier, but want to verify.

If that's the case, I recommend FT.

I just booked FRA-ZRH-MAD for just €332. A good deal for business, I get 8000 miles and I love Madrid!

Yes, I'm looking for EQMs.

Being very time restricted at the moment, I booked a same-day return a fews days ago flying LX HAJ - ZRH - MXP on a Sunday (and at perfect timings leaving at 1005h, returning by 1830h, with 90 minutes at MXP) for about 1.4 times that fare.
This will get me 10,000 miles into my account (incl. Bonus miles) - miles needed to prolong FTL status for the coming 2 years ...

And it will add MXP to my logs.

Is there maybe anyboy interested in doing a one-day-trip together to beef up the miles account?

I gotta ask: does all this really worth it, just to keep a tier? unless you're HON, what's the big loss? being able to carry 10 miles extra (admit it guys, when did you really ever use that) or getting into the lounge (which if you don't fly enough to reserve the tier, probably not worth you spending extra euros for a lounge entrance here and there), or god forbid you will have to miss the incredible magazine sent by LH to your home...

I really don't get why people are so obsessed with their tier levels. don't get me wrong, it's great perks and all, but I definitely would not spend money just to accumulate miles. miles is the added bonus, not an objective. besides (and this is probably not the place to say that) - I would personally stay on the ground and save the world a few CO2 emissions... I love flying, but I want to do it because I want to fly, not just to keep a silver/golden card in my wallet.

Thanks for your remarks. I gave it some thoughts, and I still think it's worth it. At least for some of us.

Biggest plus for me is to have the bigger luggage allowance. On any longhaul flight this might make a big difference to your purse. I'm not so much looking for the lounge entrance (I'm hardly in time at the airport anyway), but much more for the higher likelihood of getting an upgrade.

Concerning the CO2 foot print: Certainly you have a point here. And as long we agree that overall emision is something to worry about I still believe that I have the right to travel as I like. Some people use their cars to get to work or gym. I use public transport and my bike. But for that I don't get miles.  Wink

Copy that.
Plus the ability to use the Busines Class check-in counters instead of waiting in queues for Economy Class agents (when travelling with luggage and when in need to see a agent).
Discounts on Rental Cars in combination with the appropriate Credit Card.

Who am I to contradict you guys  Smile but I still don't think it worth the 700 euros you'll be spending just to get the miles... how many times do you fly with an over-weight that is so big, it will definitely not be overlooked by the check in agent...? and when the queue in Y will cause you to wait 30 minutes, probably the queue in C won't be that empty as well (unless you're checking in at a hub)...

But hey, at least get a trip report out of it  Smile

Every single time I go onto a trip for more then 4 days (That's one reason for me to stay away from FR who will charge excess weight charges from the 16th kilogram onwards).

And: In general, airlines in Europe have become quite strict in terms of overweight luggage recently, as they found out that it is a good source of extra income - but this has been discussed to death here on A.net.

I just paid € 332 . I wouldn't pay 700. The difference to an economic ticket is not that big.
