Should I Travel Lao Airlines?

Mon Oct 13, 2008 4:59 pm

Hi all

Im going to BKK in 3 weeks. Flying Ek return from MAN. Staying in Thailand for a few eeks then travelling around. Got most internal flights booked with Air Asia, however i need a flight into and out of Laos and the only airline flying the routes is Lao Airlines. Has anyone flown with them and what are they like safetywise?

Thanks for your help.

I have never flown with them before but I know that one of their Captains is an American who has flown F-4s in the US Navy and then had a career at a major US carrier, so that would maybe suggest that the airline is in good nick safety-wise.

(I would say that this thread belongs in Polls, btw...)

They are fine - i flew one of their ATR72s last year to Vientienne and it was very nice. Honest, no frills, happy flight crew, all safety procedures observed - very professional, no worries.

I wholeheartedly recommend Laos as well - wicked place. Not a mad-as-a-sack-of-badgers like Cambodia is.
What do you mean you dont have any bourbon? Do you know how far it is to Houston? What kind of airline is this???

I flew them in June 2008 from Luang Prabang to Vientiane and they were normal. I haven't heard of any safety issues. Gave us a nice little snack box and towel on a 40-minute flight.

Also flew Air Asia lots to/through BKK, SIN, and HAN and they, of course, were great -- no frills.

Flew VTE-LPQ on one of their MA60s. Great flight!

Quoting Bennett123 (Reply 5):

They are essentially the same company. It was know as Lao Aviation until 2003 when it changed its name to Lao Airlines. Thanks for the link, greatly appreciated.

Thanks very much for all your help huys. Im flying into Luang Prabang from Thailand, and out to Cambodia and i heard all their International flights are on ATR-42's. Is that correct? As i said the problem i have is the routes i need are only flown by Lao, and i have never heard of them so i really appreciate your help.

I doubt someone of his calibre would fly with them if their were safety issues, thanks very much for your input.

A few years ago already they had some crashes with the domestic flights on small Y-12s, Chinese rattletraps with 17 seats. Maybe avoid these. But they fly to small communities, not on the main flights to tourist destinations. And I'd feel safe on their bigger aircraft, including the MA-60 which also flies some international flights.

I see your dilemna, but if as you say they are the only flight available your choice is somewhat limited.

If you do not fly, then it is down to train or car, (which are generally less safe than flying) or not visiting those places.

Based on the stats, the number of people killed or injured is pretty low compared to the number of passengers.

This may also be of interest, the flight could be the least hazardous part of this trip.  Smile

Thanks Bennett123, That link was interesting!

Your not kidding about the transport, im going with my girlfriend and last year her brother crossed the Thai/Laos border on a bus, it got gassed through the vents and whilst they were knocked out they all got their stuff nicked! Your right, in places like this where there is no road or rail infrastruture it is probably safer travelling by air, and in terms of airlines like you say i dont really have a choidce.

I was just really sceptical about the aircraft they used etc, i have not seen an MA60 before so that will be an experience in its self.

Really appreciate the feedback guys you've sold it to me and im going to look into booking them now!

My wife and I travelled around southeast Asia for 3 months. We decided that our joint-favourite destinations were Laos and Singapore - pretty much at the extreme ends. We would like to return to both.

I too can vouch that the MA-60 is a lovely little flying machine--not overly fast, but nice.

This thread is also very useful to me, as I plan to fly on the same carrier next year.

Best regards,

Lao is a great place! 2 years ago I flew from VTE-LPQ then LPQ to Chiang Mai on their ATR72s which were fine. VTE domestic terminal was endearingly old fashioned too. Amusingly, one of the passengers asked the hostess if the plane was Russian!

I got to Vientiane overland from Bangkok (by train to the border, then bus over the border and ancient rickety taxi on the Lao side) which was fine, but later I met some people who had taken a boat along the river to get to Luang Prabang which had sunk along with all their possessions! Safety standards on the water and on the road are pretty poor, flying is far safer by comparison.
it's the bus to stansted (now renamed National Express a6 to ruin my username)

These places are great to go too. It makes a nice change from this country where red tape stops you doing anything.

Im sure your right about flying, road travel in these areas leaves a lot to be desired!

I've never flown with them but I was in Lao last january. I heard it was an unsafe airline a few years ago but now it's an airline with an acceptable safety level. Be sure to be in an ATR.
If you fly from Thailand and still have concern about Lao airlines, don't forget that PG (Bangkok airways), a very nice and safe airline, serves several routes from BKK to Lao (Luang Prabang, Pakse, Vientiane). I know only Luang Prabang in Lao and it's fantastic. Enjoy

Believe me, ive tried! Ive looked at PG, but unfortunately i need a flight from Chiang Mai to Luang Prabang, one which only Lao airlines operate. I could fly PG back to BKK then onto Laos but not got huge amounts of money! Still got student debts to pay off!!

This thread has given me confidence to fly with Lao Airlines, before posting i had never heard of them, i guess because i had no need to so i was weary, especially when i read their fleet!

Thanks for all your help guys.
