DL Upgrade Policy

Tue Oct 14, 2008 1:47 pm

This may be better suited for a FlyerTalk forum but I saw something last night that made me go, 'hmm?'

I was on DL flight 779 from ATL - DFW and I was seated in 19F and could see all of the activity at the boarding door. I was also 10th on the upgrade list for 1st as I'm only Silver Medallion.

I knew I wasn't going to get upgraded but when I saw a group of standby people come on and one of them get to sit in first (any open seat the agent said) it kind of made me a bit angry for the guy who was next on the upgrade list.

I wondered if there was policy to upgrade everybody they can or do they stop at some point and then the once a year flyer who is on standby gets the seat in 1st?

Anyway, just thought I'd start the conversation as I wondered about the rules and how it works. My guess is it was just a lazy gate agent but who knows.

Sounds like a lazy G/A to me.. Reminds me of a recent flight CVG-PDX. I lost my exit row window seat (got booted by the system, twice), they said they'd pull me if any good seats opened up (I was listed for an upgrade, and put into a middle). Sure enough, we take off, there's an empty seat in F (!!!) and I'm in a middle seat, sweating my *** off for the 4 hour ride to Portland.

Sometimes I think they just don't have time to upgrade by the book, with all of the pressure for on time departures.

Once you board on Delta you're off the upgrade list. As simple as that.

That's it folks! Once your BP scans, you are no longer on the UG list. Anyone after you gets moved up. If you wanna wait for the gate-chaser upgrade, don't board.

Actually no....

Just the other week I was flying ATL-LGA and was habing breakfast with friends and then ended up getting to the gate just after my zone was called and went right onboard. I was on a T fare so I just assumed I wasnt getting my upgrade. I was in 27F and, just great, as C-O-S is seated in 27E. 2 minutes later there is a PA "Would passenger Richard L____ please ring your flight attendant call button"

She came to me said " Did you out in for an upgrade? Your seat is available in 6B"

Having the C-O-S next to be, it totally made my day, esp since we were stuck on the ramp for almost an hour in ramp congestion.

I told that to my freind who is a gate agent at LGA and he said I just got lucky, becuase most wont go back and do that. So sounds like most just dont give a damn.

On my last DL flight CMH-ATL-MIA, the CMH-ATL segment was oversold in Y, so I volunteered and got on a later CMH-ATL flight with only 30 minutes to connect to my ATL-MIA flight. Of course, I did not make my connection. Before I left CMH, I checked loads for the next ATL-MIA flight, just in case I didn't make it, and there were F6 / Y0 . When I arrived in ATL, I went to DL Customer Service thinking DL will upgrade Medallions and I will get a seat in Y, but to my surprise, I got a new boarding pass saying seat 1A and my brother got his with seat 1B. I am an AM SkyTeam Elite Plus, but no DL Medallion!!!

Actually yes then - most G/As won't go to the plane and do on-board upgrades.

...but the question was whether boarding takes a passenger off the upgrade list, and the answer is pretty clearly no.

Actually, it is yes. Once the BP has been scanned, your name is taken off the U/G list. I lucked out once as a Silver when I waited till Zone 7 to board (took my time leaving the CRC) and got a F seat, despite me being No. 10 on the U/G list for 1 seat just 30 minutes earlier (at least according to the CRC agent...).

It all just depends on who is working the flight. I went to TPA not to long ago, 10ish on the upgrade list and I (an S2 pass rider) got a F seat. I waited till they called a few zones and I heard the Gate agent say "We will leave one for an upgrade and and give the rest to the pass riders" (talking about the 4-5 F seats left.

Actually, it is yes.

How does an agent upgrade folks who have boarded, then? By osmosis?

Like I said, that was not the case the other week

My BP scanned and even did the exit row beep, and I was upgraded about 15 min afterwards.

Pretty sure they can check their computer to see who would have been where on the U/G list, but if you ever watch the GIDS as people board, the U/G list gets shorter and shorter (much shorter by after Zone 3) - it's not all people clearing into the last 2 seats in First Class...
