How Often Does Your Elite Status Get You Upgraded?

Wed Oct 15, 2008 4:09 pm

The question is pretty straight forward, how often does your status get you upgraded? As a NW Silver, I am not up-ed very frequently but it does happen. Flying from GFK to MSP to PHX most of the time does not help my situation however. What routes do you frequent? I'd like to hear some different takes on this.

As a Silver Elite with Continental, I got upped just over 50% of the time.
My frequented routes are ANC-SEA-IAH-DAL and back.
If you're flying IAH to DFW, you're almost guaranteed a bunch of elite upgrades. There's no service on this flight, so you're really just getting a bigger chair.
But if you're flying an aircraft with a large F cabin, like a 737-824 with a 20F config, or a 739 or a 753, you've got good chances of an upgrade with CO.

As a Silver with DL, it was about 60% of the time. So far as a Gold, I'm 1-for-2. I have another 4 trips (16 flights) as a Gold - 3 to ONT, 1 to GSO, before I hit Platinum a month from today, where hopefully the rate will go even higher.

I am Gold (OW Emerald) with BA. Normally with them, I buy a J ticket. On a flight PHX to LHR I was OP UPed into F. Only time it has happened for me.

I'd guess I get upgraded around 80% of the time on CO.

Respectfully, the IAH-DFW trips lately have been mostly RJ or B735 with only 8 seats in First, or toss in a B733 with 12 in First....unless you're Platinum with an H or Y fare chances are you're going to be in coach. Most of the DFW flights I've taken in last few years the Elite boarding seems to be a large percentage of the passengers.

BA Gold - never on BA. So far my only travel on other OW airlines has been in F. I did a couple of times as a BA Silver when travelling in WT+ though. As a Gold I've only ever flown in CW (or F) where you've got more Golds so less chance of upgrade.

BD Gold - The best was my a Y-C upgrade on United flying LHR-IAD with my wife last summer. We'd booked fairly late and couldn't get anything reasonable so chose to slum it in E- hoping to pay for E+ at the airport or OLCI. It wasn't available on the way out. On the way back the agent at LHR said we'd been upgraded as I had 'good mileage with us'. Although not really upgrades I have had a number of E- to E+ bumps since UA changed the rules whereby *A Golds cannot get E+ gratis. Had one last weekend TPA-IAD on Ted, went to OLCI and pay to upgrade and found we'd already been moved to E+. Sometimes gate and RCC agents have proactively done it, I guess when they see a *G in the very back.

LH Senator - Only the once when travelling with my BD Gold father LHR-BRU. He was moved up to C at the lounge (we were on separate tickets) and turned it down as I hadn't got the move. The agent asked to see my boarding card and seemed happy to move me since I was *G too.

DL Plat - Always on Domestic routes even with Companion. Never tried on International as i always fly Business. 100%

TAM Red - Two or three long haul flights, two from Coach to Business, one from Business to First. About 20%
New York + Rio de Janeiro = One of the best combinations !

I don't have elite status with anyone! Although I have just started collected with BD. Added them on my itinery for LHR-SFO-LAX-LHR. Was booked in E+ on the last leg and got called to the desk in the lounge and given a new boarding pass for seat 7K in Upper Class!!

Probably never will happen again but certainly enjoyed it at the time!

How were you in the lounge if you were in E+ and without status?

As a platinum with DL, I upgrade on every domestic flight. On international, which is 90% of my flights, I always fly business.

BA Gold - more times than I care to remember.. But I fly on routes where J demand is heavy and often oversold, and I'm normally travelling on an expensive ticket. Looking at the records, it's about a 50% hit rate from J to F. Within Europe, hardly ever. In fact, only once.

As a PM on DL I'm 30/32 flights. Booked day-of-travel on the two I didn't get upgraded.
