Where Is The Best Economy Seat On CO 737-800/900?

Thu Oct 16, 2008 8:52 pm

Hello all,

I'm flying from ONT to IAH next on CO. The outbound will be on a 737-900, seat 8E, and the return on a -800, seat 10D. Seat 10D seems okay, but I don't want to be stuck in the middle for 3 hours in 8E. I looked on SeatGuru for the 737-900, and it says that row 8 is missing a window. Seat Expert says row 10 is missing a window on the same plane. If I have a choice of seats to move to, what would you recommend? Also, what rows are the overhead monitors in? Thanks in advance!

I'd recommend the bulkhead if you are able to grab it......I cannot stand any seat that someone in front of me may have the opportunity to recline and greatly decrease my tiny space in coach. Other than that, I would find the exit row where your seat can recline some yet the row in front doesn't recline.

Enjoy CO, my airline of choice for the last 10 years.

I'm elite with CO.
My advice is to pick a better seat now, and then do online check in 23 HOURS AND 58 MINUTES before departure, and snag the second overwing exit row aisle seat. tons of legroom, full recline. If you want a view, pick the window there, if available. I have found, in the past, that even on full airplanes, sometimes NO ONE will pick exit row seats! How weird!

On a straight 737-900, I'm talking about 16C/D or A/F for window.
On a 737-9ER, it's also row 16.
On the 737-800s, it's row 14 for all configurations of that aircraft cabin.

Either row should be tolerable, but yeah, get out of that middle seat! How did you score seats in the 'preferred' section, by the way?

Actually, seatguru also says row 10- I just checked. And it's true (I'm a 737 mechanic) that they're missing a window- Our twelve tubes for cabin air come up from the belly in that space!

Enjoy your flight! Do you have a 'snack' service listed on your itinerary? What time of day are you flying?

Thanks for the responses!

I flew today from ONT to IAH, and when checking in online, I was able to score a slightly better seat, 8F (it was the only other seat available). In any case, much better than sitting in the middle.

I actually prefer the legroom on non-bulkhead seats.

I was a little disappointed though that now they charge for checked luggage, and surprised there was no IFE on the flight to Houston. But they did serve "lunch" for free - a small pizza and salad.

I'll try to get that on my return flight.

Not sure. Since I'm traveling for work, maybe the travel agency had something to do with it, or maybe that's all that was available at the time.

I had lunch on my way to IAH, 11:40am departure from ONT. My return from Houston is at 6:35pm. And will there be any IFE on that flight?

Hmm, I'll address this below.

Perhaps you were booked full Y. I think those fares are eligible for 'preferred' seats (as though they were actually better than anything else in Y). Or, like you said, they're all that was left.

Quoting Lesismore (Reply 3):

Here's the scoop. Continental does lots and lots of IFE, you should have had it on your outbound. EXCEPT THAT... their newest 737 deliveries (-800's and -9ER's) are being delivered without IFE systems, because they're going to get LiveTV satellite TV installed soon. The thinking was that it is poor business to have the aircraft modded with the standard IFE, only to rip it out in a couple months and start over.
SO- if you're on a brand new 737, you're not going to get IFE.

Glad you got a pizza, though! That's one of my favorites, that hot, steamy, dripping in cheap grease pizza.... Mmmmmmm! I also like the hot breaded chicken sandwiches.

Your 6:35 departure is listed as a 737-800 with a snack service. Beware- you might get another pizza! But, with the 737-800, you've got a MUCH better shot at IFE.
Tell me what date you're flying (in a private message, if you like) and I'll see if I can dig up your IFE status on pda.continental.com. Or, you can do it yourself there.

Sorry for the late response. I didn't have IFE on my flight back last Thursday, a little disappointed, but because the flight wasn't too long made it okay.

And I didn't get a pizza again - this time it was a cheeseburger!
