Opinions Of Your National Airline?

Mon Nov 03, 2008 11:17 pm

I was just wondering what your opinion is of your national carrier...

For me, BA should no longer have the title of national carrier for the UK. They have pulled all international routes from regional UK airports and only focus their attention on LHR. For me, this is wrong.

I'd personally give the National carrier title to Virgin Atlantic... At least they fly internationally from some regional UK airports.

So what do you think of your national carrier?

Since the US has many national carriers I'll give my opinion about out state airline, NW.

NW can sometimes be good and sometimes bad to Minnesota. NW took our money and doesn't want to pay back, an A320 hangar was built for NW in Duluth and then NW just abandons it, and I'm sure there are other things NW has done to Minnesota that doesn't make it the best carrier. But all of my flights on NW were safe and comfortable. I wish NW expanded operations at MSP (especially international). Maybe DL will be as nice to us or even more nicer than NW.

Our national carrier was sold to the French. The other 2 biggest carriers were also sold to the French. It still hurts me inside.

AC offers a great product IMHO. I've been flying with them (amongst other airlines of course) all my life. I have yet to experience a truly awful flight with them. I've had flights that weren't the best, but thats also been true on all the other carriers I've flown.

The best thing about AC is that when I'm overseas, I always get that warm, fuzzy feeling when I see the giant red maple leaf on one of their aircarft at a foreign airport (even if I'm not flying with them on that particular trip).

Well what can I say about Qantas. In truth I do truly love them and whenever I see that red tail when driving past Heathrow it makes me feel homesick. I first flew Qantas when I was 6 weeks old and have been a Frequent Flier ever since. I love their Skybeds and although their service levels may not be similar to the likes of SQ and CX there is something uniquley Australian about the FA's that makes me smile. I always love the fact that Australian products such as Vegemite or Milo are served and that a "Could I have another Ginger Beer please" was once answered with "You certainly can mate" and now "Sure thing son". It's these touches that would be innapropriate on other airlines that makes me love them. And luckily with Australia being far away it is always a nice long flight to enjoy all aspects of the flight. The A380s will bring even higher service levels and can let Qantas compete with the best.

The product offered on board is good in my opinion - always a safe bet which can't be said for many airlines. Comparing to BA: Entertainment in my opinion is more intuitive and has a better selecton including Australian programmes as well as Blockbuster movies. Food is better however BA have the edge on J Class seats, but I am yet to compare the A380 seats which may be better. Food is also better on Qantas and I love the hotel like breakfast orders in Business.

I still hope however that Qantas will pick up from the few slip ups some of which were uncontrollable, however they did affect the reputation which I hope will be much stronger. The Queensland And Northern Territory Aerial Service has come a long way from its humble begginings.

I am a staunch supporter of SAA, and not just because my wife has worked for them for almost 30 years.

SAA have managed to maintain a pretty good level of service despite incompetent management, political interference and some crazy fleet and routing decisions. Almost everyone I speak to has an SAA horror story but strangely enough, I don't. SAA bashing is almost a national pastime here but quite honestly I don't think they deserve it.

Well,my national airline is Caribbean Airlines. Its the successor of BWIA and started operations on 1st January,2007.BWIA,affectionately called "BWEE" had alot of sentimental value to the public and therefore,Caribbean Airlines was not fancied.

However,in light of all of that, they have turned out to be a true Caribbean airline on all present routes they serve with impeccable customer service and OTP.They have started expansion recently in a very conservative manner and has been succeeding at it as well.

Caribbean Airlines all the way!!!
It is what we think we know already that prevents us from learning.......

I basically have two...  Wink

I'm Austrian - and have a bit of a soft spot for OS in my heart, despite the fact that I don't like their longhaul fleet decisions of the past couple of years, and the really awful onboard video program on shorthauls. But the service is always great, extremely friendly - and meals, even on my regular short hop from FRA to VIE, are tasty... even in Economy.

On the other hand, I've lived in Germany practically all of my life - so LH is also de-facto a national carrier for me. I'm not really their biggest fan, I've had some really bad flights with them - but, all in all, they've improved quite a bit over the past couple of years. And their success speaks for itself.

Summing it all up in one line: I hope my de-facto national carrier buys up my real national carrier, so that it can finally prosper again.
Smile - it confuses people!

I, like Leskova, have two "National Airlines".

Being from Italy, AZ is my national airline. And I'm disappointed that it was once the first class way to the fly, the fashionable, posh and trendy airline for the creme de la creme.

Now its plagued by corruption (then again, what ISNT in this world?), the crew are all bent out of shape at whats happening, they're spitefully damaging the company image, and to make matters worse, there is a limited amount of time before they cease to exist. Bittersweet; maybe Italia can once again find its "Ali", in the form of a new airline.

That being said.

living in the USA, I have so many to choose from. I frequently fly B6 (they serve almost all of the domestic destinations I fly to frequently from JFK and LGB). They are #1. NEVER had one bad experience (no exaggerating either). Always pleased. Great product, FF program, route network, it leaves very little (if anything) to be desired.

Running the kind of company I do requires punctuality and minimal setbacks. Every B6 flight I've taken (with the exception of three; keeping in mind I fly several times a month, been flying with them since 2002) has gotten me to my destination. Sure theres a few delays here and there, but ist understandable.

I didnt drink the "Blue Kool Aid", and I dont care about the IFE cos I'm usually working when I'm flying... but I can say I'm proud to call it my airline.

I can't agree about Air Canada as ACDC8 I'm afraid. I'll admit, the ERJ's on domestic flights are brilliant and comfortable, but the CRJs are cramped, the Airbuses are fair enough, but their Boeings have done nothing but disappoint. The IFE is flaky at best (both new and old), the 767s are looking worse for wear, and the 777s feel cheap and rattle. I've flown from LHR to YYZ on a 773 that had a broken overhead luggage rack that didn't close and I remember the crew being particularly rude on both crossings. I've had better and more comfortable service on Air Transat's 310s and Skyservice's 332s, especially considering the price paid.

In short: domestic is acceptable, but overseas product is really disappointing, in my humble opinion.

Really?

HV was 100% owned by KLM so was part of the deal, same with KLc.

However, I guess you are talking about MP, which is only owned for 50% by KLM, so the other half isn't owned by the french (yet).

To look at it from the bright side, 'we' also own 18% (if memory serves) of the whole group...

Pretty happy with mine. NZ is a relatively good carrier, never had a bad experience yet and have had people there bend over backwards at times to help me out.

Havent been on their long haul product but it sounds alright.

From what I know and experienced, they are reliable, efficient, friendly and an overall good airline (by many people's standards around the world). But sure they are bound to have the not so nice flights just like any other airline in the world

Hmmmm which one is my carrier ? I have dual NZ/UK citizenship , live in BRU and am shortly moving to live in MRU ?

so ....

UK - flown BD twice - they were fine but nothing to write home about
UK - flown BA twice - ok compared to any US carrier I have flown but compared to any Asia Pacific airline I have flown they were frankly crap

NZ - had mostly very good experience and love their current J class ( also in Y on night flights the staff do not hide in the galley in my experience - instead they are usually patrolling the aisles with non alcoholic drinks to encourage any pax who are awake to keep re-hydrating )

SN - when I first moved here 3 years ago I thought they were above average - since they changed to B.Light and B.Flex they are not so impressive but OTOH I have never had any probs either

MK - went last week to visit my new home but although it was an MK ticket it was on AF metal so I dont know yet , although my other half flew them MRU-JNB in J and thought the hard product was good

Apart from Barbados, St Lucia, and Orlando from Manchester, prayer what international destinations does Virgin fly to from "some" regional airports?

From the Virgin website

Quote:
Virgin Atlantic serves thirty destinations worldwide. The airline flies to seventeen destinations from London Heathrow, nine from Gatwick and three from Manchester Airport.

I cannot see Glasgow, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Belfast, Bristol, Cardiff or any other regional UK airports listed up there.

Furthermore, VS is 49% owned by SQ and 51% by Branson through UK off-shore trusts, so how can they deserve the UK National carrier title? 51% of BA ordinary shares are held by UK residents and BA serves over 195 destinations (or 300 including codeshares with the oneworld partners), so that is 165 destinations where Birdseed Airlines cannot be seen.

IMO BA is quintessentially British and represents all that is good about Britain throughout the world. There are endless threads about BA not serving the regions, that they should be called London Airways, or Cockney Airways etc. However, the UK is small in comparison to US. On land it only takes 2 hours to get from Cardiff to London, about the same from Birmingham, admittedly longer than 5 hours from Scotland (although about an hour on the plane), so there is no need for several hub and spoke systems here like in USA.

VS on the other hand is reminiscent of Blair's Britain.

Like others, i have two carriers.

Being Brazilian, where i live most of life, i have to talk about TAM.

Use to be a very good airline on long haul up to 2007. At that time they begin a
very strong international expansion and seems that they were not ready for that.
Quality of their service as well as comfort items has been reduced which also
explains a downgrade from a 4* to 3* airline.
They also changed their seats on both domestic and international fleet without
taking any suggestions from top customers, and have selected one of the worst
business seats.
To show how they are nowadays, just need to mention their 77W comes without
the F real seat but even knowing that, they are selling F to FRA !

And in the US i preffer just to point out that my experience with DL shows the
opposite of JJ. The airline is trying to improve on customer service, and will
upgrade their seats (inclusive with a better C/J seat)
New York + Rio de Janeiro = One of the best combinations !

Well im from London and i think that BA is an excellent airline. They offer a large amount of destinations and offer a very nice product, yet i can clearly see why BA is know as London Airways. I think though the situation of concentrating on London won't be as bad as it may seem. With all BA flights set to go through Terminal 5 it will make transfering through London Heathrow an easy and quick process and with domestic flights leaving on an hourly basis in some UK cities you will find you won't have to wait around much. Hopefully this will mean you only need to add an hour or so onto your journey, which is think you can cope with  Big grin

Hope it makes sence

Let's face it, the UK simply isn't large enough to support a multi-hub longhaul operation, not with one airline anyway. You can't have your cake and eat it.....BA don't fair so badly and they are a business after all. As for domestic, again you can't have your cake and eat it. I refer to Ryanair, Easyjet etc. They all suck out revenue from the 'national carrier' that makes certain routes unviable.

You'd have to turn back the clock 20 years and renationalize with a profit shmofit attitiude !

That's surprising since AC has just finished (or almost finished) replacing all seats on their 763s and renovating the rest of the interior fittings and installing new IFE systems. I believe only one or possibly two aircraft are not yet completed, except for the 3 oddball 763s with the extra doors that aren't being converted and I believe are being retired fairly soon.. All of AC's 762s have already been retired, the last ones just a few days ago.

I wish BA would concentrate on being a good British airline rather than pretending to be an American subsiduary of itself.

I got a ticket wallet the other day and it had an American landscape on the cover. What's wrong with Big Ben or Buckingham Palace?!
and with that..cabin crew, seats for landing please.

Being a Canadian and American. I want to say that Air Canada is a wonderful carrier. I think that it is the BEST among all N. American carriers. I love their colors, the BIG RED MAPLE LEAF tail, their seats, uniforms etc. I feel safe, cozy, and comfortable at home on an Air Canada flight. The only thing I hate about AC is the quality and quantity of food on all of their flights (transborder and tranatlantic/pacific). Overall, I would take AC any day over any N. American carrier. Way to go AC, keep up the GREAT WORK!! Long live AC!!
