Best Airport To Layover In

Tue Nov 04, 2008 2:10 am

Well i just spent almost 40 hours in ICN (due non-revving on oversold flights) and it seems to be on top of my list of impromptu hotel/airport....Free Wifi good food....CLEAN and a few comfortable sleeping locations in really quiet spots. Whats your best layover airport?? Where has it been closest to living hell??
Yes I'm sure this has been discussed before but maybe its time for a fresh list.
The only valid opinions are those based in facts

DTW definately.

The worldgateway is one of the nicest terminals ever. There's good spots for viewing (aside form the dots) and the train/tunnel are good for keeping yourself amused.

SIN is definitely one of them. Free internet. Lots of shops, cafes, restaurants, lounges, business centers. Swimming pool, gym, showers. Movie theaters. They even give free Singapore 2-hour city tour if you have at least five hours of lay over time.

I agree 100% a great place to stay for a day and if needed a great hotel in the airport with some great views of the active runway

Denver is definitely the best airport to layover in! Its nice, spacious, and has nice eating spaces. Plus, it has a great view of the runway at the end of the terminal. Especially in A!

If you're spending time at SIN, do not forget to pack your swim suit and a towel. There's a nice swimming pool with a bar aside serving Singapore Sling...

Its great, until you live there. Or at least, til you feel like you live in the airport.

There are a great many things to see though. There's the walkway from the main terminal over to A, and in concourse C there's a corporate jet. Yes. It's just in the airport. I don't know why.
Also, if you are into conspiracies, DEN is the place to be! Haha.

As people have said, SIN is by far the best, pool, bar, free internet (no need for your own laptop), love it.

On a different note, JFK has to be the worst! Granted I was to cheap to get a hotel room for a 9 hour overnight layover, but still, only T4 was open 24 hrs and all they have is solid stone benches.

Absolutley agree with SIN. There's no better place for a layover.

Worst has to be CDG - T1. What a dump. Spent 5 hours there in transit once, and it was the most miserable transit I've ever done in my life. I felt like I'd spend a week in the place, and that a part of my soul had been sucked out of my body. Horrible. . .just horrible.

Like many others I'm with you on SIN. Last time we were there for a while my wife took advantage of the free " day beds" while I made use of the free internet. To be fair, a number of Asian airports offer city tours (not certain about price, however) for long layovers.

KIX also has this airside, plus free wifi. SYD has free internet terminals, though wifi is horribly expensive. I know KUL also has free terminals, I'm sure many other airports do too.

SVO 2 was the absolute worst! 16 hours of killing time before check-in with no place to sleep and very few choices to eat (few cafes and an American Friday's). There are only individual seats (attached like a bench) that are 100% full overnight, cold and with dirty bathrooms. There is a little cafeteria on the 4th floor (if I remember the floor correctly) where you can also try to get some shuteye after they close for the night, but then you have to watch out for drunks. I won't get into the domestic terminal (SVO 1).... it was even worse.. and old! Terminal C is new, but also very small with uncomfortable seats and few food options.

I LOVE DTW, and AMS was great too. AMS is probably my favorite airport in the world, but DTW is great too. DEN to me is rather boring and doesn't have much feel to it, its just "there" is guess would be the way I would describe it.

I have never had many layovers as most of my fliying is non-stop but my last lay over was in DTW and yes it is a great airport. Flew DCA-DTW-MSN. I was excited to see the airport and it was great. Flew in around 8pm and flew out at 10:35pm so I was on one of the last flights out so the airport got really quiet around 9:45 thats when I took a ride on the train a few times. Its a very nice airport.
After that from my other past experiances ZRH is a ncie one too.

In january I spent one night in HEL.

It's a good airport with comfortable seats and quiet spots spend the night.

Plus you can say "Tonight we dine in HEL"  Wink

I was also a huge fan of the free WIFI, especially with a layover of over three hours.

I am actually a huge fan of ORD. Many people would call me crazy, but I love having the desks in the terminal with the outlets close by. It makes searching for them less of a hassle.
Food wise, I always grab a Chili's Bacon Ranch Burger To-Go, and eat it at the desk while charging up my stuff.

And yeah, delays happen there, for many it seems like all the time. However, I find it to be a great airport to spot in but also being able to get the necessary things done.

A personal favorite is NRT, Plenty of wide bodies to be seen, I'm never seen so many T7's and 747's in one place. Decent food choices, and they have plenty of duty free to keep those travel companions from asking why your staring at all of the planes.

Worst by far was ATL. as it became an early morning nightmare.

Since when do we have a Bojangles in the terminal? Nevermind, just remembered, it took over where Ranch-1 was on end of B.

I usually just get Bojangles on the way though since I live here.

Personally I hate B/C con, D con is nice, especially since they finally put in a permanent restaurant towards the end where all the wide bodies park. E is nice too because of the new-ness. The agents down there are not as good though.

PIT was awesome back in the day with the center AirMall and whatnot. PHL has gotten better since the remodel, but mostly everything is so spread out.

SEA isn't too bad to stay a while in.

Athens, Greece
Hong Kong

I spent over night in ATH and they played very soothing music for all of the many backpackers and others who's ferry arrived late.

Hong Kong has a 7/11 where you can buy cheap booze and crash out on the benches like a bum in the park.  Smile

The worst was JFK.
Great airport as long as you don't sleep over night in the terminal.
I can't understand why people were not allowed to sleep in the United domestic terminal.
Everyone was rounded up and put in the International terminal where the benches have individual armrest so you can't lay out.
The United domestic terminal had nice seats where you could lay out.
Bring back the Concorde
