Short Connection Time At CLT With US Airways

Sat Nov 29, 2008 12:32 pm

Hi,

Quick question. My inlaws will be doing YUL-CLT-GCM on US Airways next week and have only a 40 minute connection time in CLT. (I told tnem it was a bad idea, especially in winter ...)

If their YUL-CLT flight is late and they miss their connection, will USA give them a hotel voucher or discount? What are their options outside of waiting for the next flight one day later?

Thanks for any input.

If they miss due to weather they will be put on the next available flight, but I believe they do not get a hotel voucher for weather delays. If the delay is due to US fault then a hotel voucher will be given. They might be able to talk to the a customer service rep about being put on a different airline but that will need another connection from CLT so I don't know how much time that will save in the end. 40 minutes should be enough though, but I would talk to the flight attendants sometime during the flight to see if they can make an announcement to let people with tight connections off first. I have seen this happen many times on flights I have been on.

Forty minutes at CLT is nice...now try 32 minutes at ORD, going from F11A to C28 and the bus isnt there when you need it to be....

If Montreal is not a US customs pre-clearance airport, then they will definitely miss their flight.
GCM is a daily operation so they should get hotel vouchers for the next flight.

US Airways has a special job for agents in CLT, and probably the other hubs too called PAC. Basically these people sit in an office all day and monitor possible miss-connects. If it looks like a flight will be late enough then they will go ahead and reroute passengers and meet them at the gate when their flight arrives.

AA has a late flight MIA-GCM (IIRC it leaves MIA around 1900 local); if they can get to MIA on AA or US, it's possible in principle to make it in the same day. Of course, getting US to endorse them over to AA might not be the easiest thing in the world.

YUL has preclearlence. YUL-CLT is RW, so it'll arrive at a low C gate. That's a great location for making a connection to B, C, or D; CLT-GCM usually leaves from D, which is less than a 10 minute walk from the RW gates.

10 minutes from end of C to end of D most likely.
Even if there is 1 million people in the airport, a low C gate to the first D gate is not 10 minutes. Unless you stand in the middle of the people mover.
