UA Does It Again

Sat Dec 06, 2008 12:51 pm

So tomorrow is my return flight SYD-SFO.

Now, in spite of the fact that I bought a Y+ ticket and had reserved seat 39A for this leg, when I went to check in online, I learned that:

1) I have to pay to upgrade to the Y+ seat to which I am entitled.

2) There are no window seats available.

Even if I do get the Y+ seat, all that are left are middle seats, and now I have an aisle in Y regular.

What would you do?

I don't understand that if you bought and paid for a Y+ seat why you don't have it. Was it confirmed to you?

I would suggest that you front up to the counter very early in Sydney and ask for the exit row. I did it last year. Was fine - until the 747 had a engine failure and diverted to HNL.

The exit row is quite fine for travelling, especially the window seat - but the galley is nearby, and those bright blue/green map displays on the TV screen overhead should be switched off at night! (irritating brightness).

I also don't understand, if you've got a seat confirmed to you - then why do you need to go online and check it.. And if you had Y+ ticket, why shouldn't the Y+ seat be yours?

Other than that, if this is for real, quietly suggest that an upgrade to business class would cover the inconvenience caused...

You ALREADY paid for the Y+ seat. That should be the end of the discussion. Are they are asking you to pay for a Y+ seat TWICE?

United is an airline I have sworn to NEVER fly again. In your case, I would argue strongly that I have already paid for the seat and will not be paying twice for the same seat. If I am forced to fly Y, I expect a refund of the fee I paid for Y+. If the situation is not resolved fairly, a letter to the airline in protest, consumer affairs, and to places like msnbc.com, where a guy who writes travel articles is good at resolving disputes.

In the end, it seem at the check-in desk if the airline feels like being unreasonable, there is little choice the traveler has but to make a lot of noise afterward.

You cant actually buy a Y+ ticket, you can buy a full fare Y ticket that will let you choose seats in Y+ or you can have status in MP that allows you to select the seats. In addition to simply paying for the upgrade or paying for yearly access to Y+

Your slated to fly on one of the new configured 744s, 39A is not in Y+ on that configuration. 39A is however Y+ on one of the old configured aircraft, your best bet is to call UA and have them look at the PNR to figure out whether you were entitled to Y+ from the get go if so they will be able to change your seating around.

Hope you had fun in Australia....

Try this.........
After this trip, quit giving United your money. If a company does not or will not co operate with their customers wishes, find a another company to deal with. Hit em where it
hurts.......the wallet.
This goes for restaurants, car dealers, retail stores, etc...
safe

That was the crux of it. When I raised this issue to the agents, they refused to acknowledge that it was a mistake, but they were nice about it and apologized because the flight was 100% full.

However, the end result was that a 14yo got seated in the window exit row right in front of me. And I jumped up and said "I'll switch seats with him!" And that was that sorted.

And so I'm dropping the issue. By all rights, I should be due about $200 from UA, but they will probably give it to me in the form of a voucher if they give me anything at all but....

...I won't be using UA any time again in the forseeable future. Flying UA international did not make me proud of my country; it made me ashamed that we can't scrape together a product that can compete with Australia's and we INVENTED the airplane.

So they don't get my money.

You can buy up to Economy Plus at any time now, even when booking or between making the reservation and OLCI opening.

Before unless you had Economy Plus Access or had Premier status you had to wait until OLCI opened to get E+.

I would write a letter to UA, see if you get anything that would convince you to fly them again (I wouldn't hold out hope).

If you are UA elite, I'd switch to AA or DL (based on flying patters) and ask for an elite challenge (AA) or a status match (DL) -- but make sure you DO infact earn the status there after. There is no reason to put up with such nonsense for a company that is service. Someone out there can offer the same service to you.

I don't fly enough to be elite. But if a fare I buy qualifies me for a given service, I expect to be provided with that service without being asked to pay for it twice.

I don't think Y+ is worth it, personally. Not even on a 14-h flight.

Did anybody READ the REASONABLE response to this thread?

Quoting United1 (Reply 4):

You've had an aircraft reconfiguration, and the seat you requested isn't in the Y+ cabin.
Sounds to me like an honest mistake, rather than a three-tiered conspiracy to piss off every passenger United has ever had.

But, these days, it's a.net's hobby to make sure United is known as the worst carrier in the US sky (which would actually be USAirways, but whatever).

If you (the original poster) had a poor experience with them, that's one thing. But for everybody to jump on United's case for being a horrible carrier..... they've UPGRADED their product, for crying out loud, and that's what caused this problem in the first place!

If you aren't happy with the service UA has provided you in the past (which is implicit in the title you chose for this thread), why did you buy a ticket on them again? Given what United1 said in his reply, it does seem that this was an honest error, but if you continue to be disappointed by the UA product, I recommend that you fly with another carrier, even when UA has a lower price.
