Best Airline For Travelling Economy

Sun Dec 07, 2008 11:01 am

With 6'9" I'm quite tall and I was wondering which airline / aircraft combination offers the best seats in economy?
I'm mostly interested in legroom, but IFE is important as well.

Also: Which airlines offer premium economy at an affordable surplus to the base economy fares?

IIRC MH usually offers most legroom in Y (34" pitch). In Europe it doesn't really matter, all are more or less equally cramped, give or take an inch. There are a few carriers that offer Y+:

Not sure which one is the most affordable, but it always pays to compare.

MH and TG and OZ offer 34, EK offer around 33 on most aircraft, Long Haul Prem Eco is offered by BA, QF, VS, and BR.

I'd say that Emirates has a very good Economy Class assuming you get the "correct" aircraft.

33 - 34" seat pitch will help you and their ICE system is very user-friendly with a plethora of entertainment options.

You can check it out at http://www.emirates.com/english/flyi.../new_generation_economy_seats.aspx

On their B777-300ER the IFE is great and legroom ok, but the 10-abreast seating in Y leaves you very little shoulder room, even for a skinny guy like me it was really tight.

but the 10-abreast seating in Y

I always try to avoid AF 777s for that reason.

Since I'm mostly interested in transatlantic I'll have a look at BA and VS.
How are the fares compared to standard Y?

Flexo:
Check out Olympic Airways too.
Not sure if this helps but they have footrest in coach and a very comfortable seat pitch on their A340s.

Check out the Austrian Airlines too and try to get exit row seats. My experience with them was the best (including service, food etc.) among all the airlines I have flown.

I flew Austrian once and everything was excellent, but found their seat pitch in coach to be awful. It was on the A319/320.

Upper deck on 744s with EVA (BR) or AF has the best seat pitch in Y - up to 36" in some cases (used to be the same with SAA until they ceased 744 ops)

I have to say I felt very cramped in TG 744 - and I'm 5'9"!

AF is 10-abreast in Y on the 777-300ER only. The -200ER is 9-abreast and much more comfortable. Same situation on KL.

EY on their A345/6 is the best Y class product i've ever encountered.

EK would be equally good if they were nine abreast on their 777s.

TG's A340s are absolutely fantastic in Y as well.

Across the pond I'd say VS's LHR fleet would be the best option in terms of quality, but BA's 744 offering is very good as well.
What do you mean you dont have any bourbon? Do you know how far it is to Houston? What kind of airline is this???

SQ for Y, NZ for Y+ (Very reasonable price for what you receive; J class food, quality amenities, smaller cabin, larger seat width and pitch) .

Can I extend this thread with a very simple question - BA or VS for travelling economy transatlantic?

Thanks
