Mileage Runs And Extra Security

Mon Dec 08, 2008 2:56 pm

Good morning all. Got a question and hoping for some insight. Next week I am making an end of the year mileage run. BDL to SFO and back same day. Need 5K to keep my skyteam elite status. I am going to be in SFO for 2 hours! My question to you all is an ittinerary like that going to raise eyebrows and cause the dreaded SSSSS to appear on my boarding pass, or not allow me to check in online.

You should be able to check in on line, and, since you are only there for a few hours, why worry about the SSSS? Just don't go outside security when you get there, and get to the airport for the outbound flight a few minutes early.

Should not be a big deal if you are smart about it

Just curious, but why not stay a night in SFO? I usually stay at least one night during a milage run. I got one in February to BCN for example, specifically to obtain enough Flying Blue miles for an upgrade for my vacation in June to Malaysia and Singapore. So I try to make the mileage run a short vacation as well. This should mitigate any security questions as well I guess.

I've done a number of mileage runs, such as:

EWR-SJU-EWR (twice)
EWR-MIA-EWR
LGA-IAH-SEA-IAH-LGA
ATL-IAH-AUS-IAH-DFW-IAH-ATL
ATL-EWR-SEA-ANC-SEA-IAH-ATL

and nobody (security-wise) has raised an eyebrow. The only "scrutiny" was from an f/a on a SJU turn who did a double-take when I was back in 2F for the return journey.

You shouldn't have any more problems on a MR than you would on a "regular" trip.

While not a pure mileage run (I was bored) I did SYR-PHL-MUC-PHL-SYR a couple of years back with US. The turn in MUC was 4 hours so I exited the secure area to walk about (I love the shop with all the planes - and the fresh air outside was nice). When I checked back in with US I got the third degree about only being in MUC 4 hours and no checked luggage (only a back pack with a change of clothes). They searched my bag twice before boarding - and once again after I was on the plane (only time that happened).

And it was thanksgiving - on the slow travel days (Thurs/Fri). I had rows to myself on every segment.

Ultimately I was allowed to travel - but they checked pretty hard (course it could be also that I have a USA passport - but was born in Lebanon).
I want to live in an old and converted 727...

I thought the new sytem/software can create profiles on every traveler and eliminate people as selectess based on history/trends.

2-3 years ago I frequently got marked as selectee, but ever since, (buying OW and last second). I have never since been selectee.?

It was a CO mistake fare ATL-ANC.

I flew:

CO ATL-EWR 735
CO EWR-SEA 738
AS SEA-ANC M80
CO ANC-SEA-IAH 753 (was a "direct" flight and didn't have to deplane at SEA, but later wished I had done so)
DL IAH-ATL M80

The ANC-SEA leg was a redeye; before this, I had a four-hour layover, so I took advantage of a day room in the ANC terminal to recline, catch some shuteye, and freshen up before the return legs.

Bringing it back to topic, I had to change terminals at ANC ... CO flew at that time from the international terminal. That meant taking a shuttle bus across the airport complex and re-clearing security - I had no special scrutiny.

Hey everyone. Sorry it took me a while to thank you all for the replies. I am sort of new at Anet can could not find my thread! So anyways I am not planning on spending the night in sfo because it was to expensive to do so. Although I will volunteer up my seat and take a redeye if they want and spend some time in the city. I have friends there and they are on alert! I need to be at work the next afternoon and cant get out of it. But alas I cannot check in online. I called delta and they said I had been pulled for extra screening! LOL

Well I got my MR in. Turns out I did not get pulled out for special screening. NW/DL will not let you check in online if you have 2 flights leaving in the same 24 hour period. Going to SFO for 45 minutes then leaving is like a surreal dream! Anyways got my 5k in. Silver for 09

I am doing a LH mileage run from Nice to Munchen and back on the same day on Thursday. I needed some 200 stupid miles to complete my status for 2009. This will give me more than enough. I will get the two boarding passes (both flights) at check-in. I may go to the city, I may not, all depending on the weather. I get Senator lounge access so I will be fine.
There was a better way to fly it was called Concorde

From experience, no.

Try calling the AA Ex. Platinum desk and tell them your are short 34 miles for Ex. Platinum, they should give you your status.

Last week I did SAT-IAH-SEA-IAH-SAT on CO for a 4000+ mileage run, all in the same day. I got off the plane in SEA and right back on the same one back to IAH. The TSA was actually in the gate area looking for random people to do searches on. There didn't seem to be a method to the madness, they'd just wonder around the gatehouse, pick out some middle aged lady, and then pull her over to where 3 TSA screeners were standing. They'd ask for to see the individual's boarding pass and do a hand seach of carry-on luggage. Since I didn't really want to participate in these extra searches, I simply got up and walked to an adjacent gate until they left. The only person who seemed to be curious about my itinerary was a reservations agent whom I called to change seats on my IAH-SEA leg. I explained it was a mileage run, and she congratulated me on my new status. As to whether or not this would raise TSA's eyebrows, who cares? This is America. We're still free to travel within our own country without having to worry about what Uncle Sam thinks about it.

Oh yea, and those TSA screeners had some kind of device they'd point at someone's coffee to see if was dangerous. Kind of amusing, actually.
