Thats a tough one! They've both got pro's & con's!
Budapest has a viewing terrace at Terminal 2 & various other places around the perimiter but traffic wise a great deal of it is Malev(of course!). There's also the small museum next to the terminals with Il14,Il18,Tu134,Tu154,Li2,Yak40 & a couple of others.
Istanbul on the other hand has a busy & interesting airport at Ataturk with lots of different airlines(& lots of different Turkish airlines) & a museum close to it with about 50 aircraft on display. The down side being that (so I've been told!) you have to be very carefull spotting & taking photo's here as Aviation Enthusiast's are not as well understood here as they are at a lot of other places in Europe! Perhaps some of our Turkish A'netter's could comment on the situation here as this is one place I would also like to visit in 2009!

There is also a viewing terrace at Terminal 1, what could be called the low cost terminal.

Yes, you have to be very careful because Ataturk Airport is a combined civil and military facility. You will see guard towers all around the perimeter. Do not stand right at the fence to take pictures because that won't last long. But there are many spots a bit further away from the airport from where you can get good pics of aircraft.

Levent, thanks for the info, how long has the T1 viewing terrace been open? I knew nothing about this one! Is it well signed in the terminal building? I know most of the Biz-jets park down near T1 so I take it this is the better one for viewing them? Which one of the two is better for viewing/photo's?

Maybe we should arrange a Airliners Budapest meet?

I think it sounds like a good airport for spotting and their are some good flights available

Im up for that! Can't think of a better way to spend a summers day! If we make a weekend of it we could also arrange to go to the Budapest GA field at Budaors which IIRC is where the Li2's based that does pleasure flights! Something different?

Dave, I am not sure how long the terrace at T1 has been open now but if it wasn't there before, they must have opened it when the terminal was renovated.

The Airports of the World Nov/Dec issue has an article written by me about Budapest Airport. I will put this article online on my aviation site in a couple of weeks; I don't do this as long as the magazine is available in the shops. But if you want you can PM me your email address and I could send you a scan.

It is very easy to find. You just walk into the terminal, go straight and take the stairs up to the cafetaria. That's also where the terrace is. It provides a good overview of the apron there, the general aviation section and some of the maintenance area, as well as runway 31L. The downside is that there is a high glass partition here.

Overall the terrace at Terminal 2 is better for viewing but you won't see all traffic from here.
You can see pictures I took at Budapest on my aviation photo gallery. If I put a link here the moderators will delete my post, but send me a PM and I will give you the link to my site, or have a look in my profile.
