What Routes Have You Flown With EK?

Sun Jan 04, 2009 2:59 pm

On what routes have you flown EK? And what did you think of it?

I have only flown 2 sectors on it: MAA-DXB and DXB-LHR. The former was by the 772 and the latter by the 332. It was 4 or 5 years ago and I can’t actually remember much about them! What I do know was that I booked Madurai-Chennai-Dubai-London 12 hours before departure and it cost, including everything, £250.

Only flown them once, EK3801 DXB>JFK, EK's inagural A388 flight.

Flight was excellent, as were the crew & food, despite issues.

I cannot give a general opinion due to lack of flights.

My dad has had 4 sectors with them in a mix of F & J, he refuses to fly them again, not really an endorsment!

Flown EK on LHR-DXB and back 4 times i believe on 772ER and the 332. DXB-NBO-DAR twice on the 332 and DXB-DAR twice on the 332 and 343. Excellent service i had i always fly with them when i have the chance.

I was supposed to fly on EK JFK-DXB on 345 didnt book it on time so I had to take a different flight. Still havent flown on the 345.

Only once.
June 2006
DXB-JFK, Airbus 340-500, in Y class.

I liked it! It was difficult to sleep because of all of the IFE choices.

In 2002 IST-DXB-MLE-DXB-IST in C class and all on Airbus 330-200. Old style seats and IFE. We had the option to chose movies from a list and they gave us tapes. At that time, it seemed normal nut now it sounds funny  Smile

In 2004 IST-DXB-IST also 330-200

In 2007 BKK-HKG on B 777-300ER. Fantastic airplane and the ICE worked perfectly. I had all 3 seats to myself. I didn't want that flight to finish...

GLA-DXB-ICN, got upgraded onto C on the DXB-ICN and thought their C product on A340 awful and below Y product on the B777W.
DXB is a hell-hole...
Also flights from Europe to Asia take 4 -6 hours longer via DXB so that s why I only did once and usually fly to Europe and transit there...

I have flown MUC-DXB-BKK return, on A332 and B773ER a couple of years ago, it was kind of mixed experience.
On all legs I got the best meals I have ever had in Y, mostly pre-booked sea food. Great stuff.
And the ICE on B773 was the best IFE I have experienced, on A332 very outdated.
But the cabins on both a/c were cramped, very little shoulder room, I was happy the flights didn't last more than around 6h each. And a minor thing: the cabin colours not to my taste, kind of pinkish. The service was fine, nothing special though. And DXB was a crowded mess.

I have flown MAN-DXB on a A332, connecting onto DXB-SIN-BNE on a 773A, and the same on the return journey. I have to say I thought they where great flights. It was the first time I had flown long haul on a full service carrier and was probably a bit too excited by the free alcohol and great IFE(it wasn't even the latest ICE). I have since flown on VS to Australia, and I think that next time I will go with EK again as they now have 77W's all the way from MAN-BNE. I will also take the flight with a stop in SIN as I thought the 12-14 hour flights I had last time was too long. I much prefer the three 7 hour (ish) flights of the EK schedule. I would recomend them to anyone as I only have good memorys of the flights.

Quite a few times:

April 2004:
DEL-DXB F A332
DXB-DEL F A332

July 2004:
DEL-DXB J A332
DXB-VIE J A332
MUC-DXB J A332
DXB-DEL J A332

December 2004:
DEL-DXB J A332
DXB-CAI J B773
CAI-DXB J B772
DXB-DEL J A332

June 2005:
DEL-DXB J A332
DXB-JFK J A345
JFK-DXB J A345
DXB-DEL J A345

Febuary 2006:
DEL-DXB J A332
DXB-SIN-BNE J B773

Overall their service was a bit iffy. On some flights, DXB-JFK inparticular, the FA serving us was wonderful and the flight was just generallly lovely, whereas others, like DXB-CAI-DXB were utterly forgetful. I imagine with their current rapid expansion, service standards would of slipped across the board.

I have flown EK on the following legs:

JNB-DXB Y-Class
DXB-LGW Y-Class

MUC-DXB C-Class
DXB-JNB C-Class

The two economy flights was on a 777-300ER and 777-300 respectively. I am raiting EK to have one of the best Y products available - food, IFE and service inlcuded. It is only the seating arrangement that is a bit narrow.

I would not even consider flying EK C--class again before I know that all A/C have been fitted with new generation seats. I have flown on A330-200 and 777-300ER. You can not compare there Recliner seats to even Turkish, Swiss or the much better BA, SAA, VS to Europe. Service was quite good.

Both flights outstanding but EK's J DXB lounge is a zoo
this route was several thousand USD less than direct...

Back in 1997:
FRA-ATH-DXB A306
DXB-BKK-HKG B772 (brand new by then; first flight in a T7)
HKG-DXB A313 nonstop (pretty much worn interior), followed by a scheduled night in a hotel on EK's expense
DXB-ATH-FRA A306

Those were the days where EK was not able to to fill a A306 out of FRA and had a stop in ATH (also for fuel) in the run.
Back then they had a lot of caib staff from all over the world, speaking like a dozen languages.
Two other things remained in my mind:
Good personal IFE (by 1997 standards); bad seat pitch on the B772 with a 10-abreast seating.

I live in Dubai and have about 200k miles with Emirates, so also quite a few...

DXB-RUH more times than I would like to count
DXB-JED more times than I would like to count
DXB-DMM more times than I would like to count
DXB-LHR several times
DXB-MXP
DXB-JNB
DXB-ISB
DXB-DAC
DXB-BKK

Been on 772/772ER/773/77W and 332. Haven't managed the 343/345/388 yet.

I intend to add DXB-JFK and LAX-DXB this year on a mileage redemption.

I think that's about it. I don't really like Emirates very much and try to avoid flying them when I can. I think they're pretty good in Y, but I don't fancy them much in J. I haven't been with them in F, but obviously the suites look awesome.

LHR-DXB-DAC-DXB-LHR in Y
Decent inflight service, nothing special but nothing to complain about either, clean and well
maintained planes. The ICE inflight entertainment system however is superb, unrivalled
against any other airline i've flown. I do prefer QR though, much cheaper fares and
outstanding customer service.

I just returned from:

JFK-DXB A380 (up-graded to J - the whole experience was excellent)
DXB-JNB 77W
JNB-DXB 77W (up-graded to J, but I declined it so as not to be split from travelling companion!)
DXB-LAX 77L

All the flights were excellent - the best part were the cabin crews who were fantastic on all sectors.

I was really surprised because the reports on here are of 'patchy, inconsistent' service - not in my experience.

The ICE was great and even flying DXB-LAX in Y for 15hrs 50, I could have happily stayed on board for another few hours...

I have flown two routes with EK both back in January 2006.

BKK-DXB was a terrible experience to be honest. First off I asked for an aisle seat which the check-in agent confirmed except when I boarded the aircraft it was not an aisle seat! When I got in my seat the cabin had not been cleaned! - Thats was a first for me. The seatback in front had an old newspaper, used tissues and wrappers still in it from the previous flight. The cabin crew were rude and uninterested in providing a good service and the food left a lot to be desired..

DXB-LHR- Was a totally different experience. Good food, great IFE and friendly F/A's. Overall a good flight.

flown them on DXB-MLE, MLE-CMB, DXB-BEY, BEY-DXB (several times), DXB-THR, THR-BEY.

Uneventful flights.
Crew looked like bored ans seemed not to like each other.

Ordinary flights for an overrated ordinary airline.

I always get the same reaction to EK. It's always a 50/50 split between those that love them and those that hate them. In fact EK is the only airline to which I know that people use the word 'hate'.

Normally the first flight with them is ok and then the next gets the "never, ever again!' answer.

The issues are normally seat pitch and most usually bad staff attitude. I've never heard anyone say that EK is their prefered airline.

I'll fly with anything if it's cheap enough.
and with that..cabin crew, seats for landing please.

Just returned yesterday from my first Emirates experience. I have a trip report up in that forum.

JFK-DXB A380
DXB-COK B773
TRV-DXB A330
DXB-JFK B773

I enjoyed Emirates quite a bit, though the A330 is a major letdown of their product, IMHO!

Here's where I have flown them:
Feb 2003: LGW-DXB-MAA (777, A300)
Mar 2003: MAA-DXB-LHR (A300, 777)

Jan 2006: JFK-DXB-MAA (A345, not sure)
Feb 2006: MAA-DXB-JFK (not sure, A345)

I would travel them without a second thought. In my mind, SQ and EK are the best airlines for economy class travel. I really enjoy their economy class service and AVOD. It also helps sway my opinion that, for no reason, they upgraded me to biz class on the Feb 2003 DXB-MAA flight .

People frequently share bitter experiences they've had with EK. I've had one bad experience too. Of all the airlines I have flown to India about 17 times - SQ, CX, LH, DL, AA, etc. - they are the only ones that lost a bag. It took close to a week to locate and bring it back. Not very efficient!

In sum, I give them a thumbs-up

I guess because 50% of people are in the small-medium category and 50% (including me) are in the large-XL category. If you are big and tall the superb IFE is outweighed by the underseat box that plagues the window seats, while the good food is all but impossible to eat sat 10 abreast in a 777 with someone's elbow in your pocket. You end up with Hobson's choice: window with no leg room, aisle with several bumps per minute from FA carts and wandering pax, or middle seat wedged firmly between two different sweaty shoulders.

I flew one return trip HKG-DXB-NCL last year. At that time the DXB-NCL legs were on 332 and I had no problems there. The HKG-DXB legs were on the sardine-tin 777 and I was grateful to disembark. Yes, I would go so far as to use the word 'hate'.

Much prefer EY or QR.

The Northwest 332s have that big annoying box you are referring to under all window seats as well. So I am intrigued by what you've said - did the EK 332s not have that box under window seats? Or did you not sit in the window seat.
Minor detail though  Smile

On my EK flights, I sat in the window seats on 2 773ERs, an A330 and an A380. The only plane with underseat IFE boxes was the A330.

The Northwest 332s have that big annoying box you are referring to under all window seats as well. So I am intrigued by what you've said - did the EK 332s not have that box under window seats? Or did you not sit in the window seat.
Minor detail though

I sat in the aisle, which was fine. Config is 2-4-2 and felt less claustrophobic. I understand the DXB-NCL route is being/has been switched to 777 so I won't ever use it again. If EY and QR can charge the same fare on SE Asia-Europe runs with a 3-3-3 config then I suggest these are better alternatives. DOH and AUH are possibly marginally less squalid than DXB, too, though there isn't much to choose between them all.

The annoying IFE box is by no means unique to EK or their 777, however combined with the 3-4-3 config, narrow seats and insanely narrow aisles it is extremely irritating. One hopes that in future generations of a/c the IFE hardware won't be in such an obtrusive position.

The newer EK 777s with the upraded ICE system don't have the boxes anymore, they were able to figure out technology to eliminate that. This isn't unique to EK as well, most other top notch airlines with new aircraft being delivered don't have those leg room constricting boxes - I know SQ and EY don't have them on their newer aircraft. Our 3-4-3 seating hasn't gone anywhere though, unfortunately.

Flew JFK-DXB this past summer. Was extremely impressed with the coach service...hot towels at the beginning of the flight, great IFE, and after getting up and talking with the flight attendants for a while about what to see and do while in Dubai, scored some free champagne..Likely better than any other non-stop or connecting US-Dubai flights.
Flying in the middle seat of coach is much better than not flying at all!

Just hoping they will come to Madrid soon. Also on my Emirates wish list is Ho Chi Minh City, London-Stansted, Boston, Chicago, Bristol, Lisbon, Adelaide and Kota Kinabalu.

It's really wierd why Emirates dosen't fly to these detinationa epcially Madrid , Lisbon and Chicago. Hope they will be flying to these destinations soon. But what I can confirm is that Emirates used to to Ho Chi Minch City but the route was dropped of several year's ago.

Reagrds.

I've flown EK once, during my 2006 RTW trip, from Sin-LHR via DXB in coach.

Sin-Cmb-Dxb, EK 349 773A
Dxb-LHR EK 29 A332

One thing that sticks out was an experience during the groundstop at CMB. Once we parked at the gate and everyone was getting off, i walked up to 2L and asked if i could get off and stretch my legs, the FA said okay so i walked down the jetway and started into the terminal when the flight attendant caught my attention, having come down the jetway, to tell me apologetically that transit passengers weren't allowed off in CMB. I had to return to the plane, but i was so impressed by the effort she made to actually come all the way down to the terminal, locate me (though i hadn't gone very far) and bring me back. She was also quite apologetic as she had given me incorrect information.

the striking thing about the Dxb-Lhr flight, besides the complete fullness of the plane, was the scenery during the first half, flying out Dubai, crossing the gulf into Iran then north and west across turkey, spectacular scenery. My only regret was not being able to take pictures, as i had left my camera at my hotel in KL, and by the time i realized i didn't have it, was already halfway to the airport, so no chance to go back and get it.
Yes, I'd like to see airbus go under so Boeing can have their customers!

I only flew AKL-SYD on the B777-300, and while it was OK overall, I found the window seat very cramped. That is due to the 10 abreast - the seat was so close to the wall that you could feel the wall curving in. Other than that it was a perfect flight with good IFE and service! Would love to try their A340-500!

Cheers

I flew EK from BKK to HKG in J class last August on a B777. Had my own row so plenty of space. Service and IFE were great. I had been the only pax in the lounge at BKK, so pretty pampered. Want to try their A380 now that I've been on SQ's.

Only five flights so far, two each on the B777-300 and the A330-200 in Y plus one on the B777-200ER in C (actually this was the second ever DXB-PER flight). I will soon add the A340-500, B777-200LR and B777-300ER, all in Y.
