Only Full Y Flexi Fare On SQ?

Mon Jan 05, 2009 10:58 am

Can anyone shed a little light on something I noticed on SQ's website earlier today?

I was looking for flights for one of my frequent trips CHC-SIN-MNL in both April, July and November. On all of those dates SQ are only offering the full Y flexi fare coming in at $2135, there are no saver fares being offered whatsoever. This means for the two of us a $1200+ hike in fares from our last trip 4 months ago.

Have SQ suspended their flexi saver and super sweet fares?

No, it's called full flights! There are some days where the fare is NZ$2315. There is extremely limited availability between CHC and SIN.

I hear what you are saying. But I travel this route fairly frequently and never seen such a blanket unavailability. I have searched almost a year in advance and still not one single example of anything lower than the full flexi-fare. Have SQ suddenly reduced capacity on CHC-SIN?

No. However, even as we speak quite a few of the flights are booked full and with that demand you will see the lower fare buckets gone very quickly.

Yeah I appreciate that, as I have said I'm a pretty frequent traveller on this route, so I know that loads are very healthy. As a result I usually do book in advance. My late father and Step-father both worked for EI, and I know how yield mangement works. But I have systematically searched on the SQ website and there is not one single fare available below full Y flexi, not one between CHC and MNL right through to the advance booking limit. Is it a case that the loads are so healthy SQ can dump the saver fares and still maintain loads?

I think you answered your own question! Without getting too specific on loads, you'll be lucky to find any seats except for just a few random days. So, if the lower fare buckets are all sold, why would SQ discount seats?

The question I'm really asking is that it appears from the website that there were no lower fares at all in the first place. And no there are no random days with saver fares available.

So have SQ consciously discontinued saver fares on this route as opposed to them being sold out?

I have tried to answer the question. All the lower fare buckets are sold out! Nothing more nothing less. The flights are EXTREMELY full and there is sporadic availability. SQ has not consciously discontinued the saver fares, but have not lowered the remaining fares to the saver fares. It is quite a common occurrence in high demand markets.

Fair enough Phil, sorry if I came across all incredulous...but like i said in all my time travelling on this route I have never seen anything quite like it.

Thanks for all your help.

Would I be right in guessing you work fo SQ?
