How Fast Have You Gotten To Your Gate?

Wed Jan 07, 2009 11:57 pm

I was flying from BWI to ALB for a college visit on Southwest. My mom and I were worried that we wouldn't get to our departure gate on time, but to our surprise, we traveled from the airport entrance to the gate--by God's benevolence--in less that ten minutes. Southwest's "online checkout," short security lines and our decision to travel with only carry-on baggage probably played a factor.

What's your record? (We'll limit the discussion to major airports, as there's a large gap in "travel time" between regional airports and major hubs.)

One time, I was connecting in STL from an American Connection flight from OKC, to a Northwest Airlines flight bound for DTW. We had nine minutes to exit security, go to NWA Check-In and get our tickets, then re-enter security and make the flight. We made it, but the flight left 2 minutes late.

My best is getting out of my car at BOS one day at 547a and making the 600a LGA Shuttle without breaking a sweat.

Plenty of other times I've gotten out of my car and was at the FF lounge in under 5 minutes. In fact, that's the case at MSP for me nearly every week. Two big helps are OLCI (w/o checked bags) and being a top-tier frequent flyer and thus able to use the First Class security lines.

I had a similar experience going to visit my parents for Christmas a few weeks ago. I was flying from SMF to MSP on Northwest, and I got to the airport extra early anticipating the lines and crowds I had encountered that time of year last year. The only hitch this time was that NWA's online check-in informed me that I needed to check in with an agent (another reason I got to the airport early), but when I arrived at the terminal there was no line at all at Northwest's counter. The agent checked me in quickly and I proceded to security where again, there was no line at all. I commented on this to one of the TSA agents, who told me that an hour ago the line had been backed up down the escalator and into the lobby. Apparently I had right at the "sweet spot" where other passengers on my flight hadn't started showing up yet, but everyone on flights before mine had all cleared out. The fact that the weather in the northwestern part of the county was crappy that day and AS had canceled their flights to SEA and PDX that morning probably helped, too.

DCA from a Cab I could make it in 7-10min easy if the security line is short. Since I take the Metro most of the time the walk is a little bit longer and I never go straight to my gate. But I am going to say 10min would be my quickest time.

Nobody can beat this.

I decided to go to CHA from my house 1.5 hours before departure.

My house is 30 minutes from CLT. Drove to the airport, parked in employee lot, rode the bus to terminal, and just barely made the flight.

And how did you pull this one off? It's 260 miles from Shelby, NC (about 30 minutes from CLT, on the west side of town, so closer to CHA) and that's on a road that isn't a freeway through the mountains. Even in absolute perfect circumstances, you'd have to be driving about 180 mph to drive to Chattanooga that fast.

I'm a bit sceptical on this one...

Try still being asleep, in your own bed, 45 mins before the flight goes. Now that's my idea of a relaxing trip  yes

For major airports, I've made it from the railway station at BHX to the gate in about 15 minutes; that was including the 2/3 min shuttle, walking throught to T2, and checking in a bag at check in with KLM.

I've experienced similar times at a lot of other airports too, I guess I've just quite lucky, as these include LHR, FRA, MAD, BCN, MSP, CDG, AMS, CPH, OSL, HKG.

My speediest have been at DFW (Terminal D) and HNL when traveling F/J. AA DFW Terminal D - F/J check in can be very quick. Priority F/J security line is right next to it. I have walked in the terminal and been the to gate in 10-15 minutes (or maybe less) several times.

HNL can be fast also if you are traveling F/J. Same as above, only add the Agriculture screening, but that is usually very quick and the first thing you do when you walk in.

Sorry, I should have been more clear in there.

The flight was CLT-CHA.

I live east of Charlotte, near Matthews.

My record is about 4 or 5 minutes. Last summer I was visiting friends in Los Angeles. One of them dropped me off at BUR about 20 minutes before my US flight to PHX was scheduled to depart. I had already printed my boarding passes online, had no bags to check, and there was no line for security. I made it to the gate within about 5 minutes with plenty of time to spare.

Now that makes sense and seems very reasonable. I don't know where the employee lot at CLT is, but from what my friends that live in Matthews have told me in the past, it's a 30-40 minute drive to the airport.

Let's see...

Dropped off at MCI, breezed through check-in, breezed through security, and boarded.

Took me 11 minutes, and that was because I had to check a bag.

How fun to be able to get from car to gate in less time than it takes to drink a cup of coffee!

Yes MCI - (no major volume now except in the WN terminal, so didn't mention it in my first post) but the airport with its half circle shaped terminals was designed in the 70's for that concept of "a few steps" to the gate. Even now if you have checked in on line, printing boarding pass, no check bag -- you can be dropped at curbside and literally walk a few feet to security and gate. Pre-security days - you could walk in 5-10 min. before your flight - walk in and board.
