Planning A Trip To Palm Springs,CA. Need Help!

Sat Jan 17, 2009 7:45 pm

I am planning a trip to Palm Springs/California for the end of March/early April.

Last time I went there, I flew CDG-LAX and drove from LAX to PSP but I would like to avoid doing this again for many reasons :

First, I don't like to fly into LAX and the drive after such a long flight was exhausting and almost dangerous. Moreover, this time I will fly BEY-CDG (AF/ME) and then AF from CDG to the U.S so it will be an even longer trip.

As I am flying on stand-by with a non-rev ticket I would prefer DL in the U.S.
but any other U.S major will be fine.

Anybody here on A.Net familiar with PSP and could advise me an easy routing/connection ?

Thanks !

You can always fly BEY-CDG (AF) CDG-SLC (DL) SLC-PSP (DL). I think that is the shortest possible route to PSP.

Flights into PSP can be quite solidly booked at times. And flight options are a bit limited:

UA (CRJ) or AS (B734) from SFO, preceeded by a AF-flight from CDG.
UA from LAX using EMB-120
US from PHX using CRJ's, but too difficult to get to PHX first.

DL from SLC (CRJ) - see reply #1.

Apparently, no nonstop-flights from CVG, DTW, MEM and ATL to PSP.
The flight from MSP departs too early to be caught inbound from CDG, as do AA & UA from ORD.

_______________
The next-best option for you to consider would be flying into ONT and then drive the remaining 70 miles, which can be considerably less stressful then the drive from LAX.

Personaly I would drive to PSP. It is basically a suburb of the greater Los Angeles metropolis and the drive is no better/worse then similar ones to San Diego, Santa Barbara or other destinations that are driven thousands of times a day from LAX.

But if you indeed want to avoid a car trip you can always fly LAX-PSP as well on United who offers 8 quick flights a day.

Lastly, I would avoid other domestic connections as well as not many places have wide offerings of flights to PSP. After all once you make it to LA, you are basically in PSP unlike having to worry about double connects in both CDG and a US city.

Thanks for all these informations, guys !

While searching on the web, I was indeed quite surprised to see that most of the airlines are using small capaciies to PSP (which is not very good when ou travel as a non-rev) , and as HT mentionned, DL has no nonstop flights except from SLC ...

I will keep two options :

arrow  Fly CDG-LAX like last time, and drive ... will drink A LOT of coffee !
arrow  Fly CDG-SFO, spend a few days there and then try Alaska Airlines. They have 3 x Daily SFO-PSP with B734.

I keep in mind the second option ... I prefer the A343 or B744 anyway to SFO rather than the B77W to LAX.

Thanks again to you all.

I am not sure if this is the best option.

While I personally do not rely on caffeine at all (I have no problems to stay awake after a long flight to the U.S. for enough time to reach my hotel may it be a 1-hour drive ot a 4-hour drive), but if you have a record of falling asleep after the flight, I would recommend the following:

Seeing that you will have a flight from BEY to CDG before with a quite early start, it might be wise to take a nap on the TA-flight but no coffee (= caffeine) until then.
Start drinking coffee (or Tea / Coke / Pepsi / Mountain Dew / Red Bull / ....) with the second meal service prior to landing in LAX. That way, the absorption of caffeine in your body will have the best effect.

This looks like the best (and safest) option to me.

That way you get to spend a couple days in wonderful SFO, and AS is fantastic.

If you going via SFO, United also offers service to PSP.

But UA use the CRJ200 while AS use the 734. I

I decided to go via SFO.
Will visit a good friend there and stay a few days before going to Palm Springs.

I finally booked a "normal" ticket on SFO-PSP-SFO with Alaska Airlines. They offer a very good fare : $159 for the return ticket. All tax included.

And I never flew them ...

True, but usually you will get better service with AS.

UA also operate 3 x Daily on SFO-PSP-SFO, at similar schedules but the round trip was $209 and the flights are operated by United Express/Skywest with CRJ200.

You made the right choice with AS.
