Flying NWA 747 ATL-HNL In J. What Service DL/NW?

Tue Jan 20, 2009 7:14 am

Hey everyone,
I'm very excited because in April I get to fly on the upper deck of a 747 for the first time! I will be flying from ATL-HNL operated by northwest airlines. Does anyone know whos product will be offered on the plane though? I'm just trying to figure out if I will get two meals, Mai Tais etc. Any help would be great!

Also I have seat 73A both ways. Will this be a good seat for pictures or will the plane be too far curved up there to see the wings?

Thanks a lot

You are pretty much too far forward to get anything good of the wings. You need to be in the rear of the upper-deck to see anything good. You might see the tips of the wings and the winglets with a good stretch of the neck.

The wings also appear much smaller from this vantage point as well. I flew 18 hours on two flights in the upper deck recently. Great for nice a cozy, but not great for wing pictures/views. Ends up feeling like you are on a really long narrowbody aircraft for a REALLY long time. But, it is very quiet and cozy.

Thanks UAL. I just always wanted to fly on the upper deck. I was thinking from time to time I can go take a picture out of 2Ls door window. What would you suggest to be the perfect lower deck row for pictures of the wings? Maybe I will do upper deck there and lower deck back.

Well, lower deck, depends on what part of the wing you want to see. Doors 3L/3R are directly in the middle of the wing. Hold on, i'll post some recent pics from my trip to BKK. (Over Vietnam on the way to NRT)

4L

5R

ORD-NRT

Upper Deck 3 rows behind Right Door

On the ground you are still REALLY high up. Perhaps 4/5 stories on a regular building!

Oh, and I managed to get your DL 744 at NRT as well

Interesting that ATL-HNL on the 744 is now in the schedules. Does anyone know why DL is not rotating this 744 with ATL-NRT?

Ahh, well, I believe the NW 744 in my HNL trip report is the same one that DL has in their colors that I photographed at NRT.

Will this trip be operated exclusively by N665US or another 747 in DL colors or is there a chance a Red Tail will fly the flight?

So the flight number is DL803 and the callsign will be NW803?

No it could be any 744, by then a couple more 744's, if not most will be in Delta's livery  Sad

Does anyone know anything about DL's HNL service from Atlanta? What the meal will be like etc? Guess this means no Mai Tais! Does delta offer their signature coctails for free in FC?

Don't know about how good it will be but in F but you will get two meals. The cocktails will be free too, since they're free in F anyway, right? You got two meals even in Y going ATL-HNL and back (we did this past summer - even though one was technically a "snack" - sandwich and chips).

I'm jealous you're getting the 747-400 for this route. I've flown it twice, 2005 and 2008 and got the 767-400 both times. Nice ride, but not a 747-400.  frown

That's the only reason why I booked this. This is just a flying trip on the upper deck. I'm only going to be in Hawaii for a night.

Thanks for the help.

i'm going back to HNL for a visit in april and june, so i'm very excited about the 747 on this route. I've flown 747 twice. a Pan Am JFK-FRA in 91, and a swiss Air (atl-zrh) in 95), but this will be the first 747-400 i've gotten to fly on.
I used to fly 330's to and from msp when i lived in HNL, and got to upgrade a lot. I loved that plane, (even though by my username you can tell that the old NW DC10s were my all time favorite), but am very excited about DL using the queen on this route. hopefully it will stick around for a while.
Seems like an awful lot of F seats for the route though, 65. but i guess with delta changing all the 767-400 to international config, this might be the best plane for the route. every time i've flown ATL - HNL , it was packed.
enjoy your flight,
shelby

I assume it will be NW's New World Biz Class seat they upgraded on the 330's and 744's about the same time line AA did starting a couple years ago. Now branded Biz Elite by DL. They are comfy, angled lie flat, like AA's. Imagine you will get pre-flight drink, cocktail/ nuts, a meal and a pre-arrival snack. Drinks/wine of course. Not sure if DL does a special themed drink now. Haven't flown DL to HI in F since the 90's. Then on their L-1011's the HI F service was fabulous! How exciting that DL has a 744 on the HNL route!!! Have a great time!
