FRA For 5 Hours...what To Do?

Sat Jan 24, 2009 2:11 pm

Hello -

I'm going to be in FRA for 5 hours tomorrow from 7am till about 12p. Was wondering what there is to do there. I'll be flying out on DL.

I heard almost everything is in the Star Alliance Terminal. And also heard there is an airplane shop there as well? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

as long as you have an American passport go through immigration and take the metro in Terminal 1 to visit downtown Frankfurt. It's a drive of only 20min.
Frankfurt isn't that big so you are through within 1-2 hours. Just take S8 or S9 direction "Hanau" or "Offenbach" and get out at station "Hauptwache". One level upstairs and you are in the middle of Frankfurt.

the shop you are referring to is in arrivals hall B right accross the exit B2 named "Relay". But they don't have so much variety anymore - only books (mostly in German), postcards with airplanes and some Herpa mockups.

if you want to stay at the airport at Terminal 2 where the McD. located is there you'll find the only visitor terrace of the airport. during 25R/L operations it is very recommandable as you will see all arrivals and departures except the ones from runway 18. also you will have an overview of Terminal 2 and the apron infront of the terminal.

Terminal 1 in terms of aircraft spotting is very bad. only after security there are a few spots with good views e.g. gate A26/A28, gate A1 (a little bit). but there are better restaurants than in terminal 2.

Noo, take the S8 but in the opposite direction to the City of Mainz. People are much friendlier there and it has a nice Old Town. Just say the words "Alle Hesse' sind Verbrescher denn sie klaue' Aschebescher" and the people there will love you.  Wink

The local Spotter society is called RMAS and some information can be found on their homepage: http://www.rmas.de/ e.g. on the link "Fotopositionen".

and you should try to drink "apfelwein" (äppelwoi), it is some sort of "apple wine"! very typical of frankfurt! if you go to the city center you should stroll around "römer" which is quite close to hauptwache. people in frankfurt are quite proud of their skyline (dont compare it to manhattan), but if you are interested in these buildings try to go the "main" (it is a name) river. from there you can have a nice view!

1/2 hour by train S8. You would leave the train at the train station "Mainz Römisches Theater" (Roman Theater , which is next to the Old Town of Mainz ( http://www.mainz.de/WGAPublisher/onl...e/html/default/akah-67wd32.en.html )

Have fun!

Drink at the Schwartsvald Stube Pub in the International Terminal or the Irish Pub opposite the Frankfurt Haupt Bahnof (Central Station) or go to Freddies Kleiner Laden in Kelsterbach... All serve great German beer.....
No defect too big, no defect too small, nothing in the log --- No defect at all !!

Please be aware : It´s a sunday !

So, almost all shops are closed in Germany !
Only exceptions are gas/railway stations and airports that do not have a "sunday/public holiday curfew" ...
Next to this it´s still january and not really warm outside ...

If you want to see something i´d rather go to Mainz than to Frankfurt !
Travel time to Mainz will be 30 mins by S-Bahn (downtown Frankfurt would be 20 mins)
Access to S-Bahn trains is at terminal 1 section B one level below arrivals.

Make sure you buy a ticket BEFORE boarding any S-Bahn train as you´ll be subject to a hefty fine if caught without a ticket - no tickets sold onboard !!!

At access level to the trains there´s an information counter (next to the ticket vending machines) that will help you choosing the right ticket if you are unsure which one to choose !
Make sure your Euro´s are in denominations not higher than 20,-€ bills (5/10€ bills are best for payment) as the vending machine might refuse higher denominations due to limited stock of coins for your change ...
I miss the sound of rolls royce darts and speys

I find it amazing that even a city as big as Frankfurt seems to go to sleep on a Sunday, I had a whole day there once and it really dragged. Add to that it was "Totensonntag" so there was really nothing going on!
After Monday and Tuesday even the calendar says WTF...
