JAL Vs ANA: Which One Is Considered More "pre

Question for all of you frequent travelers to / in Japan. Between JAL and ANA, which airline do you consider to be more "premium"? Any specific reasons for how you perceive them relative to each other?

Just from cabin shots of the 2 airlines, I would say JAL would be the more Premium airline of the 2.

As far as I know ANA is under the Japanese considered to be the more premium of the two.

I'd say they're pretty much on a par in almost every way.

Haha, what a typical forum thread. One says "A" - another says "B" and a third says "Both"  Smile

I have never flown either, but purely based on perception (rightly or wrongly) I'd have answered JAL.

After looking at both their products, they appear to be pretty much on par.

Premium is a hard statement. What do you base premium on? When it comes to products, they are on par.

But for a long time in Japan, NH has been perceived as the primary domestic airline, while JL has been pereceived as the int'l carrier serving Japan. Of course that has been changing dramatically over the years, but post 1986, it always used to be that way.

Also, JAL remained a national corporation until 1985 I think.

I always fly JAL for your info so my info could be baised.

It's ANA and the reason is that JAL was always the international airline of Japan. ANA went international in a big way 15 years ago I believe and when they did they had to top JAL's service to make an impression. I always fly ANA. JAL is the number one choice for anyone wanting to work in the airline business in Japan and so its flight attendents are very nice and many speak English. The drawback with ANA is that not all FAs speak English. Cabin comfort, meals, cleanliness, overall service, I think ANA comes out on top.

Having flown both up front, I prefer NH, but JL is no slouch.

I would think that Japan Airlines is more upscale of the 2 Japanese Airlines.

I would say JAL's mileage and member services programs are more premium. ANA has far superior lounges, food, and first/business class amenities. Service delivery is pretty much on par in premium classes at both airlines. ANA has a reputation for being somewhat more expensive in some instances, especially for marquee international service.

I think the interesting thing is how alike JL and NH are.

For example, if you look at the UK's two biggest carriers BA or VS or big US carriers like AA and UA there are a lot of differences in their products and the way they treat passengers.

For example, BA and VS have different business class seating. BA offers first class but VS does not. It's the same with UA and AA. UA is installing proper flat bed seating in business class whereas AA's angled lie-flat product (which is still being installed) is considered outdated. UA has a quasi "premium economy" product whereas AA has no premium economy.

But if you look at JL and NH they (to the outsider, at least) appear to be the same. The only difference being the livery, crew uniforms and so on.

If you look at the products offered by JL/NH in the air and onh the ground I find that each airline carrier follows the other with something similar.

Compared with the likes of CX and SQ both Japan's leading carriers are somewhat conservative.

Japanese service culture in general, with the notable exception of sex-related businesses, is very conservative.

I have flown both JAL and ANA and I would consider ANA to offer a slightly better product than JAL. Still, both are pretty good and I would not hesitate to fly either one.
