Poll: Priority Baggage Delivery

Sat Feb 21, 2009 12:46 am

After frequently seeing priority tagged bags coming out last on many carriers (though usually the better Asian carriers do somehow get them out first), thought I would take a poll:

How would you rate each of these 20 airlines (on a scale of 0-10, 0 being "never" and 10 being "always") in terms of getting your priority-tagged bags on the belt before non-priority bags, on a consistent basis, across airports (ie not just at the "home" airport)?

A. American
B. United
C. Delta
4. Northwest
5. Continental
6. British Airways
7. Air France
8. KLM
9. Lufthansa
10. Iberia
11. Emirates
12. Qatar Airways
13. Jet Airways (India)
14. Thai Airways
15. Singapore Airlines
16. Malaysia Airlines
17. Cathay Pacific
18. Japan Airlines
19. ANA
20. Qantas

I have my own scoring, but do not want to influence your scoring so will keep it to myself for now...!

Look forward to your responses!

Airlines vary from airport to airport, for example here in DUB Aer Lingus are great, they even have a seperate belt, other carriers which have their own staff based here like EY, CO, DL are also very good and some others are good most of the time like BD.

But some airlines like IB, MA, OK, LH dont keep an eye on priority baggage delivery and this ultimatley leads to priority bags not being delivered first and as nothign is said it doesnt improve.

I think the best way to jugde priority baggage deliery is to look at each airlines hub airport(s) but that still doesnt give an accurate reflection on their success rate.

Any of the Asian airlines are near-flawless in priority luggage delivery. I can count on one hand the number of times when my bag did not come out when it should - the normal reason is if the priority tag was ripped off for some reason.

I don't travel on non-Asian airlines very often, so I'm not sure about reliability of priority luggage delivery on European or American airlines. But from what I heard, it's not too good.

I don't get upgrades often any more (don't fly as much), but 5-6 years ago I was upgrading very often on US and DL, less often on UA and CO. I don't think I ever once saw priority tagged bags come out first. The tags might as well have not been there.

I didn't particularly care, but I did wonder why they bothered with the tags...

NW has historically done a good job in my limited experiences with them. At MSP Customs belt, the first 30 bags off were all priority, and then in FLL the other day, about 70% of the first 25 bags were priority (by this point, I had grabbed my bags and left).

CO has also been very good for me historically.

DL on the other hand, well, priority tags mean absolutely nothing to them from my experience.

From the list above, I would put JL and NH on top of the list (best performing), and KL down the list as worst performing regarding the baggage policy to premium passengers.
