My Aunt Thinks They'll Steal Her Bag Plane Side

Sat Feb 21, 2009 2:56 pm

In about two months I'll be taking a trip BTV-LGA-ILM and ILM-PHL-BTV w/ UsAirways and I will be traveling with my aunt and cousin, both who are first time flyers. I've tried by best to explain everything to her but I am a little at a loss here so I figure I'll drop it here in a.net and see if anyone could pick it up.
My aunt was a little shocked that US will be charing $15.00 for the first checked bag so I told her she can avoid that fee but brining one bag that can be a plane side check in. I expalined what that was a few times and I think she finally gets it. She was very worried at first that they'll lose her bag. I tried explaining to her that the agents give her a tag, she puts it on a little cart before she enters the plane and then when she gets off the plane the bag will be right there, its very hard to lose a bag that way, and she also has that tag for proof. "So you're sure they won't lose my bag?????" I assured her that I was sure. After that was all squared away, her concern was "well now someone can steal my bag." I was shocked, if you know my aunt, the last thing you'd expect was that kind of thinking from her but this is all new to her so I'm letting it slide. I tried to tell her that no one will steal her bag and thats really crazy but she is convienced people will get off the plane, get their own bag and think "oh that red one looks good, too" **yoink*** and run off with her bag.

Any thoughts on this? Any way to explain to her that won't happen.

That is not going to be easy. Especially since there is minimum chance that it happens.  Smile

I would tell her to have a little faith and it won´t happen. If it really happens, well what can you do. There is no 100% guarantee.  Smile

First, say "Auntie, love, why on earth would anyone want YOUR bag?" Then, assure her that the theft reimbursement from the airlines would be worth more than the bag and contents. Practice saying that in front of a mirror until you can say it as if it were true.

Been there done that with my mother-in-law. She was fun, and we miss her, but she had a touch of paranoia that would kick in at the weirdest times.

Unless she only has a small carry-on which she is going to place under the seat in front of her and have in her sight at all times the bag could be stolen. It could be stolen if it is checked, it could be stolen out of an over head bin, it could be stolen gate checked, it could be stolen sitting in her closet at home. Traveling domestically in the US all those senarios are really unlikely. Gate checked bags on regional carriers are less likely to be lost in my opinion as you pick up and make the transfers at connecting stops. I wish I could gate check on every flight.
Enough about flying lets talk about me!

Not that it will be a huge comfort but there is a much better chance of someone stealing her bag off of the luggage carousel.

There is actually a much better chance she will get her luggage if she checks her bag plane side. It only has to go a few feet from the hold where she can pick it up. It's impossible for it to get lost, unlike baggage going through the airport system.

Also, it would be very easy to stop a would be thief on the security side of the airport. There's really nowhere a thief could run with her bag by the time she got off.

If she is booked near the front, it makes an extremely rare likelihood even rarer.

It really is the best and safest way to go.
