Route With Most Expensive Fares?

Wed Mar 04, 2009 6:48 pm

I was wondering what the typical prices were for the most expensive routes in the world both on domestic and international.

My guess is that the most expensive fares are:

International: US-Australia

Domestic: JFK-West Coast

....just from thumbing around on different airline websites looking at fares. I may be wrong though.

Any thoughts?

I would say the routes you stated are a good example due to their high demand. I would also say anything into/out of Dubai on EK as well...their fares don't come cheap.

Fare actually aren't that pricy on the transcon runs. Expecially to LAX. Can't speak for up front though but I would imagine they would be pretty low also with all the network carriers offering something.

JFK-DXB roundtrip is going for around $1000 nonstop on EK and some cheaper fares on United and other US airlines, also European Airlines.

IAH-DXB nonstop is around $1300 on EK at the moment.

But, US-Australia is also sitting at about the same price right now. I think this is the low-season for EK, though I'm not sure why anyone would want to spend and incredible amount of time there during the summer.

The most expensive US domestic tickets I buy are usually EWR-DTW or EWR-CLE - both are regularly more than $1200 for a day trip. Transcon flights are usually a bargain in terms of cents / mile.

Don't know where you got the impression that EK aren't cheap, CAL764 - they are regularly the cheapest option between the US east coast and many parts of Asia, Middle East, Africa and Australia, as well as directly to Dubai itself.

Do you mean domestic within the US, or within any single country?

Actually, let me take that back. It seems as though recently Hawaii fares have been pretty high in economy. Around 700-800 bucks in Y. Also, ANC fares are pretty high as well. So probably higher than JFK-LAX.

FAT-LAX same day RT runs close to 1K. About $2 per mile.

I can beat that...a last minute, walk-up fare LAX-BFL is $1,150 - which at 95 nm works out to be a staggering $12.11 per mile...

I would guess, however, that whether it is a last minute trip or it is a 21+ day advanced "super-saver-ultra-deluxe" special, DCA and LGA are going to be the highest fares, based on popularity of these flights with business people.

Or, PIT-MGW at $1411, which is the cheapest next-day one-stop (there aren't any nonstops); about $19 per mile. Of course, that's per mile in a more or less straight line; the flight goes thru IAD!  Yeah sure I don't doubt that many such examples can be constructed. Or, if you feel that the connection is cheating, DAY-CVG is just under your $12/mile.

While not the most compared to some above-I just bought (well my company just bought) a non-stop IAH-DSM for ~1050.00

I personally just bought a roundtrip IAH-LHR-IAH and IAH-AMS-IAH that together was under 950$ (again for both).

PHL-BOS is routinely over $1000 without a Saturday night stay.

I can never find good fares between Europe and BEY. Never. I always get a great deal from the US to Europe, but always get screwed from anywhere in Europe to BEY. You would think a flight from LHR-BEY, be like 400-500 bucks...I had to pay almost a thousand dollars with taxes just for that segment, when my MCO-IAD-LHR flight cost 400 bucks.

If it's JFK-transcon route that competes w/B6, the fares are probably lower than others.

HOPEFULLY, that will change when WN comes to BOS this fall; offering this route would be a no-brainer for them IMHO.

As an example of how fares often have no correlation to route miles... back in about 2000 people were, in a few actual instances, actually paying more for SFO-PSP and return (an intrastate route of 429 miles each way) than what I paid to fly during the very same week PHX-DTW-FRA and return, which is over 5,500 miles each way.

On another occasion, on an itinerary and ticket I put together for a customer who requested first class, the MIA-TPA segment (203 mi) in F cost more than than his SEA-MIA segment (2,719 mi) in F. Even so, MIA-TPA in F yielded "only" about $4.25/mile, making it a bargain compared to, say, LAX-BFL (see reply 9).
