LAX To AKL On Who?

Sat Mar 14, 2009 8:58 pm

I'm planning a trip to New Zealand this fall for my birthday, Non-reving across the ocean to AKL. I'm pretty sure I want to fly NZ but was wondering about others people opinion on the carriers of choice. I could try QF, NZ or whoever else fly the routes....give me suggestions and experiences please!

Well would you like to try out the A380 go with QF. NZ uses the 772 on the route.

kind of limited options - but you could try something unusual like TN LAX-PPT-AKL or FJ LAX-NAN-AKL or LA LAX-SCL-AKL( the loooooong way)

I thought the LAX AKL route on NZ was on a 744? I never even thought about the A380 and QF. Does QF fly nonstop on LAX AKL?

Hi There,

Go NZ, by far the best choice of service in every way from check in right through until you get off the airplane in AKL. NZ have also just updated there interiors with AVOD/new seats etc, really is a better product in my mind.

QF has the A380, but you run the risk of perhaps getting a slack crew as is often the case with flights originating from the US.

Enjoy New Zealand

Hmm, you seem to be right. On some days this summer NZ will use the 777 on the route and the 744 on other days. So you have to check which days you will go to see if you will get the 777 or 744.

I didn't think that QF operated the A380 from AKL-LAX, I thought it was non-stop from SYD or MEL to LAX. On the MEL-AKL-LAX route I thought it was either a 744 or an 332, but I could be mistaken.

NZ is operating a 744 12x weekly and 2x weekly with a 772 using the flight number NZ5/6 (Southern Winter schedule). NZ1/2 is the flight which continues to London and departs AKL earlier; also arrives in AKL earlier. So the 744 will operate NZ5/6 5x weekly.

QF operate a 2-class 744 on the AKL-LAX flight. Soon the AKL-MEL sector with the 744 will be cut out to allow for connections in LAX to JFK. The A332 was just a fill in while QF were waiting for their A380s.

Other options - Island hopping - LAX-APW-AKL, LAX-NAN-AKL on FJ..

If you were looking for a direct flight, I'd be choosing Air NZ. The 744 has 2 more inches of legroom in Economy at 34" and if you were thinking about Y+, the 744 also has the better cabin and an option for the upper deck.
It's all about the destination AND the journey.
