How Would You Improve Upon The CRJ200

Ok, let me start by saying, I hate this aircraft. But, they're everywhere. And, here in the Western US, they're by far and away the most common RJ out there.

So, if you were to make this aircraft more attractive to the passenger, to where you might actually want to fly this aircraft on a 2+ hr flight, where would you start? (Don't say cut out a section of a 900, that's too easy and proves that the 200 was bad to begin with). What do you view as the essential changes? And, if we're to throw out the economic realities, what would you add to make this 1st generation RJ the RJ to fly?

Get creative. Have fun. (Skywest, please take note of any and all recommendations!).

At least they could put the windows at a level which at least a few people could look out of without hunching over. Having just taken my first two CRJ flights, I expected it to be bad, but considering I'm 6'1", I really had a hard time looking out of the windows. That, and the fact that I couldn't stand up in the aisle, without hitting my head. I can't believe that I want to fly those little jets, but, hopefully it happens.


Other than that, the CRJ didn't seem too loud. Granted the first flight (SRQ-MEM) had to have a few seats up at the front left empty for W&B purposes. I suppose Bombardier could have pushed for a slightly higher MTOW, but its not that big of deal.

They need to lift the windows by at least 15cm so that I can see something without twisting myself until my back and neck breaks. They are too low. Big grin

Personally I'd like to see them improve the take off and landing performance. I've flown on quite a few of them, and I like the aircraft other than that.

You ask two different questions, but my answers are: by way of improvement, cut them up and make them into artificial reefs to stimulate overfished areas of the ocean; with regard to making me want to fly on this aircraft for 2+ hours, that is absolutely impossible. They are a pox on commercial aviation.

I don't know why people swear that a CRJ is to small for anything more than 2 hours. I don't understand why people complain about that. If the market only has demand for the 50 seat jet, and is 2.5-3 hours, why complain. When your choices would be the CRJ flight or no flight to that city at all? Really, I have no problem with no IFE or anything like that. Take an iPod or something. You know what your getting into, so, entertain yourself. I mean, really, if you truly believe that every plane in the world has to have 1st class/business class on it, you live in a warped world.

I have no problems with a 50-seater on long flights, but here's what I'd do:
1) Widen it a few inches so two normal sized people can sit beside eachother without one being pinned against the wall while the other is hanging out in the isle
2) Raise the windows to a height where people taller than 4 feet can see out
3) Make a bigger pit and raise the MTOW so they're not leaving bags behind every time there's a full load, and maybe have the option of taking a couple pounds of cargo along for the ride
4) Lower the cold limit on it, a plane built in Canada should be able to start when it's below -40, all the non-Canadian built airliners around here can do it...


Otherwise I'd just burn them all and go buy a real airplane.

It's not that its 50 seats - it's that it was a biz jet that was lengthened without consideration to the window placement or that pax better plan to back themselves into the restroom. I love Hawker 25's too, but not if they were in a passenger config.

While I don't want to restart the ERJ vs CRJ debate, I'd take row 11 on MQ's ERD over any seat on a CRJ 200 anyday, anytime, anywhere.

These are pretty much all the issues I have with this aircraft. Unfortunately I have had to endure some 7 legs on them this year already. The hour flights are bearable, but the three 2 hour legs were not.

I fly CRJ-200s all the time. I really don't have a problem with the airplane because it provides SWF with at least some commercial airline service. Having said that though, the windows are at the same level as my genitals, so unless I move my eyeballs to a more southern region, I can't see out the window!
