What Are The Cheapest US Airports To Fly?

Thu Mar 26, 2009 2:18 am

I have a voucher, and I would like to do a quick day trip somewhere new. I know BUF is a cheap place to go, but since its close to Toronto, I would like to go visit, but I can't find flights I want and I can't afford hotels lol.

Cheap in my definition is $150 r/t or less (preferably with US so I can use voucher).

Connections through Charlotte are preferred lol. Also, it would help if the dest. city had a great mass transit system.

If I can't find a nice city to visit, I guess I'll use it to MCO again for $118 r/t. My flightmemory looks boring lol.

Currently, MDW-MSP is about as super-cheap as you'll get with NW and WN going at it.

Depending on where you depart from it can vary, but on US SJC and SNA have been quite cheap from PHL and BWI. Right around or under $200 depending on dates and length of stay etc.

I would aim for a west coast or atleast midwest city to get the most miles from the voucher.

Providing a departure airport should be essential to form a qualified answer ...

IND often has low fares, because it has a pretty good representation of LCCs. And there's a fare war on at DEN. Neither meet your mass transit criteria, though  Sad DEN has one light rail line, which does not go to the airport. IND has no rail-based mass transit, though it does have an express bus from the airport to downtown. If you like history, IND has the most military monuments of any US city aside from DC, as well as the NCAA headquarters and a few other museums downtown. Oh, and I think there's a racetrack or something on the West side  Wink

BOS is an option:

- Cost is $147 for a r/t day trip on US Airways
- Great transit system in Boston - real quick and easy to get into the city via subway, and it's a very walkable city
- routing on Sat May 9 is ORF-PHL-BOS-CLT-BOS, lv ORF at 555a Ar BOS 944a; lv BOS 420p Ar ORF 857p
- Equipment types are CRJ, CRJ, A319, E190

Several other dates/combinations work as well for the $147 fare. Connections are possible via LGA, DCA, CLT and PHL as well; various equipment types too.

I'm not sure if I understood what you were saying about BUF, but if you want to make the trip to Toronto check out Megabus. They operate from BUF (right from the airport) to the downtown bus station in Toronto, generally for under $10 each way. The hotel could still be a problem though...

That sounds great, but if I go to BUF, I would spend at least 3 or so days in Toronto. The flights that I prefer leave at really early in the morning or arrive really late at night. And I just saw the scheds and I would still need hotels for the night I arrive in BUF and the night I will leave from BUF.

Right now, I think BOS will be a major option. I got it down to $108 rt with taxes totaling $148.

Now, I need to solve my voucher confusion lol. The thread is here on Trav. Polls and Prefs: "US Voucher confusion"
