DL Just Trimmed My Itinerary... :(

Tue Apr 07, 2009 6:28 am

Hi!

So, I was scheduled to fly DUS-CDG-ATL-RDU-BOS-DCA-ATL-CDG-DUS and I just got an email from DL stating that there had been an itinerary change.
Okay, since this happens ALL THE TIME with DL, I did not think much about it.
But what actually happened is that they just capped two of my flights and put me on the direct ATL-BOS and BOS-ATL flights respectively.
My original flights are still available, thus I fail to see where the problem is.
I guess I will call them as soon as I get back home later today...  bomb

I'll tell you it's probably because the ATL-RDU and RDU-BOS is a regional jet and DLs just lost a boat load of those.

Where did I read that? I can't post it here . . . sorry, but I beleive that may be the issue.

The thing is, I just looked up a mock itinerary for my travel dates and the exact same flights can still be booked. So they are still available.
As for the BOS-DCA-ATL leg, I could see their reasoning in my short connection time in ATL, but other than that, I do not see anything wrong or changed with my original itinerary.

I'm intrigued by the word "lost". What do you mean by that? Reposessed? Or did DL just park them or terminate the lease? And how many is a boat load? I assume these are all CR2's?

are you talking about EV having to ground most of the CR2s? If so IIRC they are all back and all came back on thursday.

Yeah, that . . . I hadn't heard they started flying again . . . thanks for that.

Perhaps that explains the TO's changes and then his ability to still see the flights later.

Not really. RDU-BOS-RDU is operated by Comair.

Sort of

There are still cancellations going on from ASAs CRJ2s, however thankfully, Skywest has a few CRJ2s in ATL to be able to take up the slack.

For example, tomorrow morning, my SBNATL commute on ASA was cancelled. However, there is a Skywest flight, with the same times, running with an extra section flight number.

When I came home on sunday, my original commute (ASA CRJ2 to SBN) was cancelled to the maintenance issue, but due to loads I flew to another city...

Are you actually stopping in RDU and DCA or are these just connection points?

US airlines don't guarantee you routings as long as it's not a stopover.

There is a department at DL that I believe is called "Journey Control". Their job is to eliminate unnecessary connections and unreasonable routings which end up costing the airline money.

If your original routing includes no stop-overs, it is clearly a very inefficient routing to get to BOS. Journey control will re-route your trip to bring it within a normal number of connections (one per side of the Atlantic where possible). In this case, there was a direct flight available at the same price which got you to your destination quicker.

Usually the Journey Control department is more of a problem when trying to find award seats.

That ay or ay not be the case, but I paid a higher fare than I would have for DUS-CDG-ATL-BOS and return.

Because I like flying. The day is "wasted" either way, plus Flying Blue still works on segments and I like my Plat status...

I did DUS-CDG-ATL-CLT-ATL-DUS last year... Due to delay of 10 minutes of the DUS-CDG flight I missed the flight in CDG and had to be rescheduled.

Because of that my would have been 767-400 flight became the old boring 767-300 one...

...and then they lost my luggage too!

so, glad I was able to book DUS-ATL-CLT flight for my next trip to CLT in a few weeks time without connecting in CDG

returnflight though is through CDG

Actually, if you send FlyingBlue a copy of your original itinerary and your new after travel, they'll probably give you the segment credits.

Well what happened in your case is that DL was definitely trying to do you a favour. Although, unfortunately for you, it didn't exactly turn out to be one !!!

The so called "Journey Control" department obviously looked at your itinerary and would have thought you chose it because it was the cheapest or the only one available, and therefor did you a favour by reducing it.

If they had known you had paid more for this itinerary because you like flying extra legs, well its hard to say what they would do. Your logic, that you like to fly as many segments as possible, might not even register with them.

Yeah, but those flights are almost exclusviely mainline anyway, as they were in my case.

But it showed once again that DL has THE BEST US call center by far. It is always a treat calling them.

They'll put you back on the original routings as soon as you call them. I had purchased a ticket to fly BOS-CMH-DTW-CWA-MSP-BOS a few weeks ago. The 90 minute CMH connection was intentional so I could drop off some documents to somebody else originating in Columbus.

DL readjusted my flight to BOS-DTW-CWA-MSP-BOS. While I'd normally appreciate the streamlining, I called up, explained the need and they reverted it back to the original itinerary.

I hope you have plenty of layover time for each city because it's always the delayed Delta RJ's that will screw up an entire itinerary.

I've done that sort of thing often . . .

Taken the AS milk run from ANC-SEA, why? Because I could. ANC-CDV-YAK-JNU . . .and then JNU-SIT-KTN-SEA. Only cause it is there.

Ditto CO from GUM to HNL via a half dozen stops . . . and that was back in the B727 Island Hopper days. Ahh, those were the times.

I would be thankful that DL reduced my stops. All that up and down, changing planes would drive me up the wall. I love flying but that itinerary seems to be a waste of time I would spend doing something more productive. I believe that the vast majority of travelers would like to make their journeys shorter and not longer and thus this change would be welcomed.

If they (DL) offer the routing for booking and set a fare for it, then why do they afterwards start changing a booked itinerary ? Once booked, they should leave it to the customer if he/she wants to accept a more streamined itinerary or not.

WTF?!

After spending over one hour on the phone yesterday, I wake up to the email that they have changed my itinerary to DUS-ATL-BOS-DTW-ATL-DUS.

What a joke. Especially since I already have an itinerary where I arrive in BOS on DL after I am scheduled to depart again...
