How To Get To London From SW Scotland...

Tue May 05, 2009 11:46 am

Right, I'm looking at the possibility of going down to London in September time, since, I've never actually been into the actual city of London since I was 1, there 's a fair few options available to me, on the dates 8th-10th September (middle of the week right before my birthday). So at the moment, Im pricing things up, the options available to me are:

Virgin Trains Carlisle-London Euston
Ryanair Glasgow Prestwick-London Stansted
easyJet Glasgow/Newcastle-London Stansted
easyJet Glasgow-London Gatwick
British Airways Glasgow/Newcastle-London Heathrow
BMI Glasgow-London Heathrow
FlyBe Newcastle-London Gatwick.

So browsing through for those dates,
The train comes out : Cannot check more than 12 weeks in advance  Yeah sure  sarcastic
Ryanair comes out at: £20 return (no taxes - but travel to and from PIK and STN required which bumps this price up a fair whack).
easyJet is about £60 return from GLA and NCL to both STN and LGW
BA from NCL on those dates is about £76 return, but you do get a proper service and a flight into a convenient airport to get into London itself.
BMI is coming out as £68 return rising to £198 return depending on which inbound flight that is selected.
Flybe is £59.78

All taxes are included.

For myself, the train is the handiest and probably quickest, and Newcastle is a lot easier to get to than GLA or PIK..

Which one would you choose, and is there any decent Londres hotels for a reasonable price (I know about Jurys near LHR - But that gives me bad memories thanks to forum member Nighthawk  Sad  Sad  Sad ).?

Cheers

The train is your friend. Far less hassle and you'll be right in the centre of london in about the same time.

Whilst thats true, and the trains are fairly new and fast, they can be very expensive compared to the flights (including travel costs to and from the airport), although that can be offset by the number of beers that one can have on a 3 hr 20 min train journey compared to a 1 hour flight  Wink

Vrigin trains are very good! They have modern (for Uk standards) trains and the journeys are all very comfortable. Euston is conveniantely located and there are a fair few convenient hotels (Premier Inn) just outside. If you are looking for hotels away from Euston, some chains such as Thistle Hotels are okay, but nothing spectacular. Also there is an easyHotel around the corner from Praed Street (Paddington), but I don't know if you plan on being able to stand up in your room!  duck  Bayswater is also a good area when it comes to cheap hotels. I have stayed at the Phoenix Hotel which is Best Westen. This is on Kensington Square Gardens which is a bit far from the City centre, however close to Notting Hill and Hyde Park. It is also quite easy to get to from Euston, you just take the 27 Bus towards Turnham Green and get off on Westbourne Grove.
I am not to sure on how good the hotels closer to the city are.
Good luck with the trip!

Have you considered National Express Coaches?

Standard Apex Return is £32.00

I think I'd be sick spending that length of time on a bus  vomit

Obviously the first part involves the bus from my home village to Carlisle, or Annan. And possibly a train from Annan to Carlisle if I decide to do it that way, fool!

I'd fly, but then I don't do trains where I can help it and I know you love them... BA Staff Hotline would only save you 2 quid at £74.20 so £76 is the best you're going to get there really. What are you upto in London as to be honest if BE is a lot cheaper into LGW then I'd probably just do that, it's not that bad to get into London, but if you're going to be out West over my way then LHR will be more convenient definitely.

If you drink one less pint every day for the next month then that's your BA fare paid for anyway  biggrin

Speaking of that, after this upcoming weekend, I shall be enduring a painfully long detox, argh.

Hopefully Mr MYT332 can show me around the city, unless he's swanning off to Nice or somewhere  Wink

I probably will fly into LHR, T5 is a spot on experience

You'll easily have 76 quid free then! BA it is, and you can enjoy a complimentary beer or 5 both ways as you'll be drinking again by then!

Excellent, well LHR it is then! I'll probably be about too so can continue our sightseeing trip from the ground that we started in the air last year!

Have you thought of BA from GLA to LCY? A quick check on BA.com and I'm being quoted £88 return in September.

Okay, that's slightly more than BMI and FlyBe have quoted you, but you're much closer into Central London, and the transport costs are cheaper. I reckon it might work out cheaper over all - it's certainly cheaper, easier and quicker than arriving at STN or LTN and then transferring.

Re accommodation: there's a plethora of hotels available at a range of prices - just check around on the internet. Serviced accomodation is another (cheaper) option you have.

Good luck!
