Beach Suggestions From CGN Area

Wed May 06, 2009 3:18 am

Im staying with a friend in a place called Pulheim, roughly between CGN & DUS for a week in June. I want to get a couple of days away on a beach. Geographically the nearest coast is in Holland.

Where are the best beaches in Germany / Holland and with cheapest / easiest commute from CGN area. Is it cheapest to hire a car and just drive or take advantage of some cheap AB flights? Or a train?

I was thinking about Sylt - is it worth going there?

Hi!!! First off, IMO the best beaches would certainly be on the North Sea coast in the Netherlands. Try Zandvoort, which is a short hop outside of Amsterdam. And to get there, I would check out www.bahn.de the German railway website. They have special fares starting from EUR 29.00 each way(restrictions DO apply).
Renting a car is an option that will give you more flexibility and you will be mobile. However, parking in the Netherlands can be scarce, and expensive. Drive time to the shore from CGN is about 4.5-5.5hrs depending on traffic.

Sylt is supposed to be very nice. But be warned, it is the wealthy, wanna be wealthy, think I am wealthy, and better than most crowd. Accommodation and just hanging out can be painful on the wallet. Also, you would be best to get a flight with AB/LH. (depending on the day of the week.)

Let us know what your plans are and have lots of FUN!!!!  Wink

Do you mean: "Go swimming" by that ?
If so, the North Sea not exactly gets warm (especially by June). A trip to some place in Southern Europe would be recommended for that.

Otherwise, I agree with Chootie's recommendation about going to The Netherlands using either rail or car. No point in flying CGN to AMS (usually also quite costly).

Alternative could be to fly to the U.K. and stay on the South Coast (Brighton and the likes via LGW, LCY or SOU) or the Coast in East Anglia (Harwich, Clacton, ... via STN).

Expensive to stay (in busy summer).
Expensive to get to unless you fly in, as the german railway has a monopoly for access (cars/autos get carried on freight cars across the causeway linking Sylt with the mainland).

It is a lenghty drive from Cologne to Sylt along Motorway A1 ! Lots of construction between Münster all the way to Hamburg, with frequent closures during weekends between Bremen and Hamburg. And you will have to pass the tunnel under the river Elbe in Hamburg which is notoriously riddled by traffic files during rush-hours and vacationing traffic at weekend when tubes get closed for refurbishment.

Not exactly swimming, though Im hoping it will be warm enough to need to have a quick dip in the sea to cool down. Just want a couple of days to relax and sunbathe.

I lived the first 25 years of my life in London so I have been to all these places Big grin In fact, we are visting family in London first and flying STN - CGN with AB. So we want to see a bit of Germany but have a relaxing time too.

Thanks for the info, I found some decent fares with AB. I was also thinking about being a plane geek and flying to Hamburg and flying with Sylt Air on a Partenavia P68 and taking the scheduled AN2 flight, but I must also think of the wife and our travel budget - Germany is only stage 2/4 of our vacation.

Whats Hamburg like as a city? We have an office there and the branch manager is a good friend of mine and accomodation would be free. Any nice beaches nearby?

Thanks for the info guys!  thumbsup

taking the scheduled AN2 flight

flights in summer 2009 between Sylt (GWT) and OHR (Wyk auf Föhr) are operated by and bookable on www.hanseflug.de
I'll fly with them HAJ-BRE-HAJ this Sunday for the airshow being held at BRE.

Hardly within town (although many Hamburger will claim that thera are good beaches on the river Elbe ...
To get to a real beach you'll have to drive either northwest to the North Sea (around St. Peter Ording) or northeast to the beaches on the Baltic Sea (Ostsee in German) either north or east of Lübeck.

Sylt Air on a Partenavia P68

Do they fly from HAM or from Uetersen EDHE ?
