Ryanair : Now They Charge For Online Check-in!

Thu May 21, 2009 1:20 pm

Hi,
Two days ago I booked a return flight CRL-DUB with FR for a daytrip at the unbeatable price of 32€, including priority boarding and credit card surcharge (something that you can't avoid unless you have a visa electron). Great. Today I checked the fares for a colleague who wanted to join and the fare is still available but since today they're charging 10€ for online check-in !
Ok, it's still very low for a flight but I really don't like the way they're acting Sad

Where does it say you have to pay for online checkin? It only says it will cost 40£ to check in at the airport.

I was just about to book flights to DUB with Ryanair.
Once you've selected your times it says in the price breakdown "online check-in fee, 2 x £10"
With the new fees its actually worked out cheaper with AF from LCY

Now it seems that they only charge for the lowest fare available  Confused

Tried yesterday evening with random dates and it showed like this :
web fare adult 0,00€
online check-in 5,00€

And today here's what you get (all the web fares at 0,00€ are gone) :
regular fare adult 2,99€
online check-in 5,00€

OR
"free online check-in" adult 4,00€
online check-in 0,00€

and in the same time they send an email to people saying "lowest fares cut by further 50%, flights for only €4,00 !"

But of course they didn't mention the new online check-in fee.

Every half-brained person would realise that the total amount you pay is now actually higher with the new check-in fee than it was when the fares were "50% higher" (unless you don't wanna check-in, oh wait, you'll have to!)

Yet, some people will still believe FR's garbage and think they made a bragain.

How very picturesque!  bigthumbsup

But people will still think that FR is the cheaper option, which might be true when it comes down to teh fare alone, but if you add all the fees, it's a whole different story. In the end, sadly, people will never learn!

That is very irritating that they charge for online check-in but the moment that a customer's Ryanair fare costs more than any other carrier they will opt for the other carrier.

All in all the FR fare is normally well below any other carriers and that's why so many people choose to fly them.
and with that..cabin crew, seats for landing please.

True in most cases but I've noticed that if you need to add luggage then sometimes other carriers such as BA/BD are not too different in price.

You're absolutely right ! Last year a colleague asked me if I could find for him and his wife something great to spend a week-end in Dublin. It was finally cheaper for them to fly EI from BRU (and even more interesting since we're at the same distance from BRU or CRL but you can reach BRU easily from where we live...).

talk about something wrong...

here's what you get when looking for flights in june :
CRL-DUB
regular fare : 2,99 €
online check-in : 5,00 €
taxes/fees : 15,49 €
Total : 23,48 €

same flight next day...
fare : 4,00 €
online check-in : 0,00 €
taxes/fees : 0,00 €
Total : 4,00 € !

Well, I made a dummy FR booking to go from MAD to BCN at the end of the month. Round-trip it was about €30, including a checked bag.

Not even AVE is that cheap that far in advance.

I didn't say they were expensive at all, they're still very cheap on some occasions but as I said in the first message it's the way they're acting that is bad. For instance, if you try to make different bookings for the same routing you'll see that the taxes and fees are different for each fare...
Yesterday in the evening I was about to book a CRL-DUB return 24-25 june. Outbound fare 4,00 € | inbound fare 14,00 € | free online check-in | taxes and fees 0,00 € both ways / total 18,00€ : woww ! I didn't have the time to book as I was late to go to work (no, I wasn't expecting to find something cheaper) and then planned to book this morning. So I come back home, open my mailbox and there's an email from FR announcing some great offers from CRL for june and july, the offer being valid until thursday ! And here's what I get today for the same flight : outbound fare, special offer 0,00 € | online check-in 5,00 € | taxes and fees 5,00 € | inbound fare, special offer 0,00 € | online check-in 5,00 € | taxes and fees 15,00 € / total 30,00 €... Great, their special offers with amazing fares at 0 € are finally more expensive (!) than the regular fares they don't avertise for ! Don't get me wrong, it's still very cheap but I'll wait till thursday when the amazing offer ends...

Yet another reason why I will never set foot on an FR aircraft. I haven't done it yet, and I Have no intention of doing so in the future. I simply can't bring myself to fly an airline whose CEO has such blatant disdain and disregard for his passengers.

They always seem to make Easyjet look like a full-service airline in comparison - which is quite an achievement.

Been like that for ages. You used to find, say, €5 with no taxes, whereas €0.01 would be with taxes, so the sub-total for the latter would be a few times more than the former, even though the former had an obviously higher airfare. And it is the same now: recently, I searched for EMA-BHD. I could pay £0.99 plus taxes and online check-in, coming to about £25, or £4 without taxes or online check-in, so just £4.

The story continues... Same return flight, 18€ monday, 40€ yesterday and finally 12€ this morning ! Now I'm just wondering, is it legal to do this ?

While this is often the case, in FR's defence, I just returned with two friends from a trip STN-MRS-STN, and paid exactly £2 per person inc all taxes etc, no more no less. Total card bill (with Visa Electron) £6. The flights were on time, at relatively sociable times, and both airports were convenient for the places we were travelling from/to.

Surely legally there has to be an option to avoid the checkin fee, otherwise it becomes part of the minimum fare and has to be advertised as part of it? At least the credit card fee can be avoided by paying with Electron...

Yes FR is a disgrace when it comes to "Charges", but people are easily 'drawn in' by the "low fares".

I for one will never fly FR - for starters the interior of the aircraft is just awful and so off putting!

Almost every charge is optional. I, for one, don't pay for anything except the fare - and that includes no card fee (I have Electron for that purpose) and no online booking fee (I wait until the fare is has no online booking). If you make a few changes or do a few things, you can easily get stupidly cheap tickets. So, I shall enjoy such fares whenever I book FR.  Wink
