Best Intl City For Spotting...

Sun May 24, 2009 9:32 pm

My days at UA are coming to an end in about 6 weeks to begin my career with ATC. And I'm wanting to take one last international trip just for the heck of it. So I'm thinking about doing a quick trip just to get my passport stamped and do some spotting (if my wife even lets me go  Smile ). So what airports have the best opportunity for some spotting? I've always wanted to see what DXB airport is like but the flight gets in late and leaves even later. I've been to LHR and FRA, and wouldn't mind going back, but wanted to see if airports like ZRH, GVA, or FCO had some good spotting chances. Replies here or messages would be fine!

Manchester is very spotter friendly. Lots of good locations.

Not much action compared to the likes of LHR etc, but still very good

As soon as i read the thread title i knew i wanted to say MAN! Definately one of the best Locations on either side of the airfield and a good viewing park

One or 2 VS 744's a day, and now a VS343 is here around weekend time. Also 747 cargo flights etc so its by no means boring. During quiet times (mid-day ish) its full of BE Dash 8's and ERJ's but morning rush is good!

The Airport Pub is situated literally at the start of the Runway 23R and especially during the summer its a great place to sit, have a beer and watch aircraft depart right infront of you. You can taste the jet fuel!

Amsterdam. It's famous for spotting. Lots of places to go, no fences (just ditches), you can get really close to the traffic. No doubt, I'd go to AMS and check out the city as well.

I just got back from TXL this afternoon........didn't realize they had a viewing deck above the concourse, I certainly would have gotten to the airport earlier to view!!! (and a few spotters along teh way as we were taxiing to the runway!!

ZRH has a good spotting deck.

Does get a bit boring after a while seeing nearly all LX though lol.

They have a nice bus tour, and they take you to a fab location near the main runway, and we got dropped there just as the SQ 777 took off. WOW

AMS has (had ?) a very nice observation deck.

DXB is very interesting but you can only spot if you are airside. There's a transit hotel but it's a bit expansive I think.

DXB has a fantastic airport hotel called Sheraton Deira. This place has a rooftop terrace with brilliant views of the airport/runways. Aircraft take-off over the airport and land over it at different times of the day. Depending on the time of the year, you can stay there for just £63 for one night - visit www.asda-travel.co.uk. Amazingly inexpensive. The variety of aircraft/airlines serving DXB is brilliant. Visit http://www.plane-spotting-hotels.com/Dubai.htm for some more info.
