Great Small(er) Airports

Wed May 27, 2009 11:44 pm

I was flying through Columbia SC last week and was impressed with what a great airport it was. Big airport feel in a small footprint.

Am curious as to other airports that are mostly served by regional jets that you'd suggest are worthy of special mention.

I think that HPN is a great little airport. It basically serves Connecticut and the New York area. There are only a few gates but it is one of my favorite airports to fly in to.

DAL7e7 is wondering... Do pilots take crash courses?

PHF is my favorite small airport. It beats ORF easily and has great airport food and a great view of when your plane lands  Smile.

I like MAF for a really small newer terminal airport that still has some mainline flights.

I found BUF to be a pleasant airport to use. Friendly TSA staff, good food (pizza and buffalo wings), massage chairs, Boingo Wi-Fi (not free), cubicle desks with power outlets etc. made a 6 hour layover go by rather fast. It's pretty modern as well, and doesn't feel too small or too big. The washrooms are very clean as well.
The biggest mistake made by most human beings: Listening to only half, understanding just a quarter and telling double.

Quite a number of the smaller airports I have used in the U.S. make it to this list.
Of those visited recently, I would recommend CHA.

LGB certainly deserves to be named. It's a cute little airport in its own right, and it is downright delightful when you compare it to its grim, dreary, soul-sucking neighbor to the north (LAX) and its unremarkable neighbor to the east (SNA).

I think that my favourite small airports that I've used are;

ZQN - Queenstown, New Zealand - Clean, airy, welcoming, and a great view from both inside and outside of the terminal buidling, not just of the aircraft, but of the Remarkable Mountains!

LCY - London City, UK - Ok, so I know it's not a quiet airport, but it's still pretty small, and it functions beautifully. The views from the departure lounge are great, and I've never had any problems, I can't fault it.

SXL - Sligo, Ireland - How can you fault an airport where the departure lounge is effectively a pub? This is a great little airport, with just a couple of flights a day, fantastic.

CFN - Donegal, Ireland - Like Sligo, it's a nice quiet airport with a fantastic looking terminal building. And it's right next to the beach. Great views of the airport from the beach with green hills in the background!

IOM - Ronaldsway, Isle of Man - Fantastic little airport with a nice terminal, friendly staff, and a really interesting array of aircraft. Go there now before FlyBE takes over and ruins the variety!

I'm biased because it's my home airport, but BOI has quite a nice new terminal. Great views for spotting, decent food choices, and tons of space to sit. Free WiFi and a quick security checkpoint are a big plus too!

Gainesville, Florida was great - it's maybe 75 feet to go from car to gate, TSA lines are very short (only CRJs to ATL and CLT), it's a well-designed airport, and a 7-10 minute drive from UF (which is about 90% of Gainesville).

When I visit my friend in Gainesville, my friend loves the fact that I fly into GNV and it's a cinch for him to come and pick me up before we go to bars.

LCY gets my vote. An absolute gem of an airport so close to a couple of real old horrors (LHR and LGW).

Until recently I would have included THF too, but the Berlin authorities didn't seem to like it.

In my local part of the world there are lots and lots of tiny tin-shack-and-a-strip type airports but I can't reccomend any of them...

RKV (Reykjavik City, Iceland) - Great view out onto the apron, quick check in times, and no security at all. You can walk from the check in desks straight to the gate and aircraft without being poked, prodded and stripped of your particulars.

FLW (Flores Island, Azores, Portugal) - Modern terminal building, much too big for the number of flights they get really, with happy staff and lots of windows giving views out over the runway and apron.

ZAM (Zamboanga, Philippines) - Great just for the fact that it's open air! Despite handling 732s, props and A32S aircraft there are no windows at the front of the departures lounge, just a veranda and a big open space - so you sure as hell hear when the plane arrives, especially if it's a pocket rocket.

MPW (Mariuopol, Ukraine) - For an airport that gets one or two flights a day it has s a very large and modern terminal building, most regional airports in the Ukraine are small affairs which are dated and teribly old fashioned, but this one was sleek and well presented.

PLH (Plymouth, England) - I have to mention my home airport; from my seat on the plane to the seat in my car in 30 seconds, you just can't beat it. The nicest staff of any airport I've been to working in a compact and well kept terminal - there's a real sense of pride about the place.

LCY (London City, England) - For an airport which isn't really so small any more, it's a great experience. Some of the newer gates are a bit of a walk, but on the whole it's just so quick and easy to navigate.

I would have to mention AAL, my former home airport. THe only thing you can't see from the airportbuilding when you are landside is the eastern half of the runway.
