Alt. Airports For The DC Area?

Sun May 31, 2009 1:42 am

I need to go to a conference in DC and they want us to fly into DCA. I want to take NW award ticket, and even after calleing them, I can't use BWI, DCA, or IAD.

So, what airports could I use that could still get me to DC in the day?

PHL seems to be my option because a train takes me from PHL to the Amtrak station  Smile.

Any others?

Another option would be Richmond, VA (RIC), 108 miles by road (per Google Maps) south of Washington. NW operates about twice daily from both MSP and DTW to RIC (using CRJs). Not sure what public transportation there are between RIC and Washington, apart from renting a car. It's a 2 hr drive or slightly less.

I'm about an hour and some from RIC lol. I'm not flying ORF to RIC lol.

I might just stick with PHL then.

Delta doesn't offer a valid fare between ORF and DCA/IAD/BWI - only options are UA (to IAD) or US (to DCA). PHL would be the best option on Delta/Northwest, but it'd be a pain - fly ORF to DTW/JFK, then to PHL; followed by a train ride from PHL to 30th Street, followed by a 90 minute train ride to Washington/Union Station.

Your best bets are to either take Amtrak (about 4 hours) from Newport News or pay for a flight (most likely US is the best bet since you can go nonstop to DCA, or for another $10 or so add a stop in CLT one way) - it comes out to about $160 round-trip. By the time you add in the costs for an Amtrak ticket to/from Philadelphia to Washington (about $70 r/t on an off-peak regional) and the $10 9/11 fee on the award ticket, you're only paying about $80 more than what'd you'd be paying with the award ticket.

I'd just buy a revenue ticket on this one (or drive up to DC) and save the 25,000 miles for a nicer trip that's a bit longer, where you can get some more bang for your buck.

Ya, I think thats what I'm going to do:

Drive up to DC

Train to PHL

PHL-DTW-ORF with NW (DC-9)  Smile
My last flights with NW
