Metro Areas With The Most Major Airports?

Thu Jun 18, 2009 5:50 pm

I'm sure this has been covered at some point in the past, but we even have had a change or two in the recent past. So...

What metro areas have the most major airports?

The big one that comes to mind is NYC, with three (LGA, EWR, JFK). Berlin used to be a candidate with SXF, TXL, and THF, but this is no longer the case.

What's your definition of "major"?

Might as well define "metro area", too.

I am sure it has been discussed before, but these are my choices:

London------------> Heathrow, Gatwick, Luton, Stanstead and London City
Paris---------------> Carlles de Gaulle and Orly
Tokyo--------------> Narita and Haneda
Miami--------------> Miami Int. and FLL
Los Angeles-----> LAX, SNA, LGB....
Sao Paulo--------> GRU and Congonhas.
Rio de Janeiro---> GIG and Santo Dumont
Moscow-----------> DME, SVO and VKO.
Rome---------------> Ciampino and Fiumicino.
Milan---------------> MXP, LIN and maybe BGY( for FR)

Sorry, I should have clarified -- there are lots of cities with two airports. Three or more are uncommon. I don't know why LON slipped my mind, so we have LON, NYC, Moscow, Los Angeles, and maybe Milan depending on how you count it.

I should have added HPN and ISP for NYC.

Los Angeles Metro Area has 5 Airports of decent size if you count in ONT and BUR (with the others being LAX, LGB, SNA).

Other than come to mind:

San Francisco: SFO, SJC, OAK

Shanghai: PVG and SHA

Toronto: YYZ and YTZ

I wouldn't consider Ft. Worth's Meacham Field as a "major" airport. What happened to DFW? Also, there's AFW, but that too may not come under "major".

Not a major airport (although it ranks as the 11th busiest airport in Canada by number of movements), but Toronto Buttonville Municipal Airport (YKZ), about 18 miles north of the Toronto city center, once had limited scheduled services to YOW and YUL operated by one of Canadian Airlines' regional carriers. I believe Dash 8s were used. That was sometime in the 1980s or 1990s and didn't last very long, a year or two maximum.

Hamilton (YHM) also isn't far away, about 40 miles, and has WestJet scheduled service, plus some charters (and scheduled cargo services).
