What Flights That Offer Best Views Of Earth?

Thu Jul 02, 2009 8:48 am

Just like the topic says- what flights offer the best views of earth, more specifically views of well-known landmasses, i.e. mountains, lakes, waterfalls, rainforests, islands.

I've heard that West Coast- Asia flights offer incredible views of Alaska.

Two flights that come to mind for me are a DEN-SLC morning hop last year when the sun just hit the east face of the mountains, and a descent into AKL many years ago.

I would like to know if these flights are worth getting a window seat-
S.A. flights over the Amazon
Europe- South Africa day flight
UK-southest Europe, where one can see the Med. Sea and all of Italy

Looking at the Med is pretty unspectacular; normally hazy and detail is impossible to see very well. The most beautiful sights are either the Pyrenees or the Alps, especially in winter when they are all covered in snow - I always enjoy seeing them pass beneath, especially at sunset when the sky and shadows produce some amazing affects:

Well I've only flown in and around Australia and New Zealand, but have had some amazing flights. The mountain ranges and volcanoe you see between AKL-CHC are incredible. On the other hand I flew Jumpseat between KTA-PER last year, and the red land mass of the desert was equally amazing laid out before your eyes.

Having said that any view of the world 35000 feet up is impressive, i'm happy just looking at cloud formations lol

My flight from LAS-EWR last April was spectacular. In this order you see: Hoover Dam, Grand Canyon, Zion Nat. Park and Canyonlands, the Colorado Rocky Mountains, all those little (big actually) irrigation circles in the western Great Plains, the Mississippi River with all its curves and former channels, at least a couple of the Great Lakes. Depending on the time of year, you can catch interesting thunderstorm clouds, snowfall patterns on the ground, or fall leaf colors as you pass over the Appalachians. The variety on this flight impressive, even the subtle stuff is interesting.

I haven't Travelled it, but I assume sin-ewr or something similar would give great views of the arctic.

Flew DOH-IAH v.v. just recently and the flight down was spectacular, as weather was clear most of the way: desert of Middle-East, mountains of Armenia, big plains of Russia, Baltic (Estonia/Finland) Fjords (TRD) north side of Iceland, all of Greenland was clear, and, finally, Lake Michigan with full view of CHI (+ ORD/MDW) down the Mississippi (STL) towards IAH...

Never experienced such fine- and clear views during a 15 hrs flight  Smile

The arrival to SCL from the east provide some spectacular views of the Andes. Having a window seat is invaluable in these flights.

EWR-PEK has some really nice views of the Hudson Bay area, northern Canada in general, and Siberia. And, it flies right over Lake Baikal. (at least, it did when I was on it.) The window seat is definitely indicated.

I'll have a window seat no matter where I'm flying, though. (unless it's a night flight over the Pacific!)

How about the 777 Emirates flight from Dubai - New York/Boston? Apparently goes over the North Pole, that must be some fantastic viewing

I have done many Arctic flights and it is pretty awesome. I have even seen some Northern lights. All you can see is ice and big cracks and stars. Just the opposite, AMS-JNB, it is very inspiring to fly over the Northern Africa daytime where all you see is the desert.

Any route that brings you over Iceland especially in the winter time is simply stunning. My favourite to date, Manchester - Calgary went over here along with a Greenland and much of Canada. Superb.

You can also get some cracking views soaring in wave over the peak district at about 6000 feet in a glider  Smile

LAX/ELP - sit on the left hand side and enjoy the multi-coloured desert.
SCL/AKL - it's night but when flying close to Antarctica its the best view of the stars you'll get anywhere on the planet.
HKG/SYD overnight - just because over the outback you can see night become day with absolute clarity.
Anything over a mountain range like the Andes, Himalayas, Southern Alps
Anything into/out of MTY during the day for beautiful views of the unusual mountain ranges.
Into or out of LAX at night is pretty amazing with the big sprawl of the city lights below.
Sometimes over Greenland you can see icebergs too.

But as another poster said - pretty much everything looks stunning from up there!

LHR-HEL is quite interesting in that you get to see northern Denmark, central Sweden and then the Finnish archpeligo. Really is beautiful in any season.

Flying anywhere near or over Switzerland is also another favourite.

Seeing all the Caribbean islands on the way into Caracas was good too.
and with that..cabin crew, seats for landing please.

I remember of a fantastic view of the Teide over the clouds after take-off from TFN on a rainy day...

Must be very nice indeed. I flew LAS-IAD in 2006 but after spending all the night in the casinos I slept during the entire flight ! I'll be on the same route again in october so I'll try to keep my eyes open this time  Smile

I agree with EZE-SCL, flying over the Andes is incredible in the winter.
