Which Airport Has The Most Runways?

Tue Jul 07, 2009 6:33 am

Just wondering which airport world-wide has the most runways. Seems DFW or maybe ORD. Perhaps AMS?

If you're talking commercial, DFW would have the most, at seven. If you would like to include AFB's (Air Force Bases) then Edward's Air Force Base would have the most. If you look on a sector chart, Edward's only technically has 3 runways, but those are paved runways. If you include the desert/sand runways, there's dozens.

Hope this helps!

AMS has six, of which four are usable at the same time, in the best case.

Is it, in fact, true that DFW is bigger than Manhattan? I've heard this before. Can someone confirm? What are the square mileages of the two pieces of land?

DEN layout is designed for up to 12 runways - though only 6 are built.

Would that be for all the secret squirrel stuff that the conspiracy theorists think is hidden beneath the airport. They also think that a 7th runway was built but has been covered over.

No but despite that ORD has plans, and the room, to add an 8th runway ....

O'Hare's Master plan is for SEVEN runways - five east/west runways (9/27 & 10/28) and two SW/NE runways (4/22)

The current and future airport layouts in PDF format. Beware these are two very detailed sheets and will take a while to load.

http://www.ohare.com/MasterPlan/Appendix%20E%20-%202.pdf

The runways to be eliminated at O'Hare are 14R/32L and 14L/32R. After the reconfiguration is complete - KORD will be able to operate almost all of the seven runways at the same time, something they cannot do today due to the intersections. Three current runways each cross two others. In the revised plan, there will only be two runways crossing one, and that one will cross those two - so usage will be limited but much less than today.

KDFW is in preliminary stages of adding a sixth north/south runway - which will become 18L/36R. The current 18L/36R will become 18C/36C. However, this new runway will cross 13R/31L.

I know KDEN has a lot of room - but I don't see any master plan to expand beyond the current six runways. I can see where another two N/S runways can be added outside the current four and where two more E/W runways can be added outside the current two. So getting to ten is easily possible. I doubt that KDEN will ever support that level of traffic though.

I thought this was put on hold several years ago, especially after AA depeaked its hub. Is 18L/36R now moving forward? I know it's in the master plan, but I haven't heard anything locally about it. Aren't the remaining perimeter taxiways likely to be completed first?

Can't you have 7 simultaneous movements at DFW?

Not only is it tied for the most runways at any airport, but if I remember right, you can use all 7 at once for either take-offs or landings making it the highest capacity airport in the world.

Can anyone confirm / deny??

Considering it's size, I'm rather impressed that MDW has 5 runways. Granted they are not all air carrier certified but still...for a one mile square, that's a good number.

You mean seven simultaneous landings or seven simultaneous takeoffs? That would be easy enough on a calm day-- one departs to the NW, two to the N, three to the S, one to the SE-- but you could probably do something similar at other airports.

I've seen this operational pattern often at KDFW

Landing 18R, 17C, 17L, 13R Takeoff 18L, 17R, 13L. There is a crossing for 17L landing aircraft going over 13L which has to be coordinated by the arrival and departure tower controllers.

You will also see

Landing 36L, 35C, 35R, 33R Takeoff 36R, 35L, 33L - This operational pattern has no aircraft crossing active runways except for a possible Go Around on 35R.

I've also seen 17C/35C used for both takeoffs and landings at the same time in high takeoff traffic periods.

This picture shows the original master plan, including all 12 runways. The talk amongst the controllers was getting 26R/8L underway sometime soon so that when they bring airplanes in from the east, they wouldn't be constrained to the 2 currently available. Not to mention the long taxi back when landing on 27.

Correct, but when they were building DEN, in the 1990s, the DEN staff would often come to DFW and talk to me and others, about what DFW did right, and what we did wrong, back in the 1960s and 1970s when DFW was built. One thing DFW did very right was to aquire that 18,000 acres.

Correct, but, for now the new west runway (called the 16W/34W projest so as not to get confused with on going projests on 18L/36R or 18R/36L), is on hold. The EIS was completed about 6 years ago.

Correct, the perimeter taxiways will be completed first. One is complete now (SE quadrent), and three more to go. The MW quadrent taxiway will include the tie in taxiways for the 16W/34W project.

No, ORD does not win, DFW does as it can use all seven runways at one time, something ORD will never be able to do.

Quoting Dartland (Reply 24):
Can't you have 7 simultaneous movements at DFW?

Yes. In a south flow, you can land on 13R, 18R, 17C, and 17L, while departing on 18L, 17R, and 13L. In a north flow, the arrival runways are 31R, 35R, 35C, and 36L, and the departure runways are 35L, 36R, and 31L.

Additionally, DFW is the only airport in the world certified for triple simultanious ILS (Cat IIIb minimums) approaches (18R, 17C, and 17L). DEN may be capable, but the FAA has not certified them. When 16W/34R is built, DFW will move to quadruple simultanious ILS (Cat IIIb minimums) approaches at the same time, making it the only airport, then to be able to do that. You must have 5,000' distance between the runway centerlines to do that.

This is what they are currently studying.

Quote:
The seventh runway is expected to be either south of Peña Boulevard in the airport's southwest quadrant, parallel to DIA's existing east-west runway on the north side of Peña, or parallel to Runway 8-26, another east-west runway in the northeast quadrant.

A planned DIA airspace study that the Federal Aviation Administration is expected to launch later this year should help airport planners decide the best location for the new runway.

http://www.denverpost.com/breakingnews/ci_12152243

The original plan called for the next east-west runway to be built south of Peña Blvd parallel to runway 7/25 before building the east-west runway on the northeast corner parallel to runway 8/26.

However, they are considering building the one in the northeast corner parallel to runway 8/26 first as it will be cheaper to build. A runway south of Peña Blvd parallel to runway 7/26 would require relocating some cargo facilities as well as constructing taxiway bridges over Peña Blvd, so it will cost more.

Ultimately the FAA airspace study will be the deciding factor.

All this talk about DFW makes me feel proud knowing I live just 20 minutes away  Wink I won't lie by saying it literally took me 15 minutes to taxi after landing, across the bridge, and 10 minutes later on the ramp to E14. Never understood why we landed on 13L.
