Why Is It So Expensive To Fly To LAX?

Wed Jul 08, 2009 7:17 am

So as the title says...is it because of the distances involved international (eg coming from DXB or somewhere in southeast asia or India) or does LAX charge higher landing fees? I was just looking at fares online for Emirates and its almost 10,000 INR cheaper to fly to NYC than LAX from BLR. Im paying 57,000 INR to fly to LAX while my friend who is also flying EK is probably paying closer to 46 or 47,000 INR to NYC. Ive noticed this with other airlines too, i.e BA, LH, SQ, etc.

From DXB we speak about 4 hours more flight, so I don't see it to be more expensive.

but indeed for some reason it is, i thought it was because of higher landing fees at LAX or the fact that maybe LAX only has one daily flight.

DXB New York are 11 hours I estmate, LAX 15 hours. So the price per mile is lower to LAX than to NYC. Both will be lower than on a flight to Doha.

I quess its becuase of a mix of the greater distance and the much lesser competition/amount of seats to the west coast in comparison to the east coast.

Bearing in mind competion from European carriers, Im sure there is alot for connecting possibilities for DXB-JFK then DXB-LAX.

i would tend to agree with you, but AF, LH, BA, pull the same kind of stuff too, which i think is unwarrented because there are plenty of european carriers at LAX. Some asian airlines do the same (MH, SQ--in particular).

Simple:
Suppy - Demand

Airlines charge what the market will bare. The pricing for NYC vs LA is based on market demand. If an airline could charge 100,000INR and get away with it they would.

LAX has one of the cheapest cost structures of major US airports. Its has zero to do with landing fees.

and everything to do with more competition and more flights in the NYC metro area  Sad. But im glad to hear LAX has a low cost structure among the major airports  Smile. I surmised that maybe LAX had higher landing fees so thats why airlines charged more per ticket.
