LAX - SFO: AA, WN Or UA?

Wed Jul 15, 2009 2:00 pm

Hi,

I'm having a bit of trouble deciding between which airline to travel with. I'm looking to depart around noon from LA on 08/06 so they're all pretty good on that front. On the way back on the 8th though I want to leave after 6. Preferably about 8.

Mainly just because I want to do some further sightseeing on the Saturday and get dinner before getting the BART to SFO.

Any suggestions? I've heard very mixed reviews about UA but they have the latest departure times on the Saturday. I'm also inclined to go with AA on the way there for the M80/M83.

I don't mind splitting carriers either. Any advice for the way back?

As a product I'd say Virgin America even as its such a short flight.

If schedule is what is driving you then United is the choice due to the sheer frequency they offer. Also listening to ATC on Ch9, is not a bad way to pass the flight.

Also for reference Saturdays are a slower travel day hence why many carriers offer reduced schedules domestically.

Lastly hope the weather cooperates for your visit. If it gets foggy or low ceilings expect ATC delays at SFO which can have a cascading effect as the day goes on.

I hear they are FANTASTIC! My buddy flew them and he loved it so much!

Regarding the primary question, out of those 3 i would go with AA, but it is really your call, if you want to spend alot of time there on your last day take UA, plus ch9 is always a pleasure.
If you are looking for something new, i would recomend Virgin America.

I had the chance to fly Virgin America from SFO-SAN in May and would definitely choose to fly with them over UA in most cases, but on a flight that short I think that picking the most convenient schedule is the way to go. It looks like taking UA would get you an additional 2 hours to spend in San Francisco, which I think certainly outweighs any advantages the VX (or AA, or WN) product might have over UA on a 1 hour flight.

I'd say VX or WN. Your midday departure from LAX should mitigate the security lines at Terminal 1 you see in the morning. VX is nice, though for such a short flight, you won't really be able to take advantage of their full product. They will have limited food available, and it won't be worth it to pay for TV.

Thanks for all your opinions.

In the end I've booked VX. Pretty decent flight times too:

LAX - SFO 12.25
SFO - LAX 20.15

I had a look on their website and they look pretty fantastic so will give it a shot.

Thanks very much for responding!

Excellent, I was doing an LAX-SFO r/t and decided on Virgin America also cheapest of the airlines, UA, VX, WN and AA and AS even.

Have a good time!
