Songs To Fly To

Wed Jul 15, 2009 7:27 pm

I'm compiling a playlist on my I-Pod of songs I particularly enjoy when I'm flying and would love to hear other people's favourites. I've noticed my tastes change slightly at altitude! So when you are sitting back at 35,000ft watching the clouds go by or gazing at the stars, what do you most like to listen to?

Here's some of mine to get things started...

Speed of Sound - Coldplay
Life on Mars - David Bowie
Fly Me Away - Goldfrapp
Sympathy for the Devil - Rolling Stones

No joke, once I was on a Futura flight that played this while I looked out the window, in total heaven. Also on another Futura flight, that classical piece, I think it's called Flight of the Red Baron or something...but that freaked me out!

I miss Futura  irked

Renegade by Yanni - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=unyfE9mS8XE

Never too Late by Yanni - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lb3m8oB6Q2M

Aria - Yanni - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4HC8XQRoEYM (this is the BA advert from the 80s/90s if you remember).

Yanni is great for flying. Very worldly, multi-cultural music - gives you a real feeling of travel in the purest sense. Its all wonderful music to just close you eyes and luxuriate in.

I expect only a few of you have heard of Yanni.

I first heard "Renegade" as part of the In flight entertainment programme for an American Airlines flight on Christmas Eve of 2000, from BOS to LHR on Airbus A300-605R N70074. I was listening to the in flight entertainment programme, and we were delayed for a little while on the ground, and i got listening to this song, Renegade. We began our final taxi. The song grew in stature. We held short on the runway, and the song calmed, then as the pilot kicked off the brakes, it broke, and it was the most beautiful piece of music i had ever heard in my life. The song toos and fros beween the violin and Clarinet, and as it did, we climbed through the clear blue New England skies, turning north east.

Anyway as the Airbus leapt off the runway at Boston Logan, i listened and took it all in. It was like a multi sensual experience. You can feel the airliner, and the feeling of flying, and the way you take that first breath after takeoff, a deep one, and the smell of JetA, and the view from the window of the retreating Boston Bay, and then in your ears; the most wonderous and truly beautiful piece of music you have ever heard. I knew this even though i had not heard the piece before, and i remember like it was yesterday swallowing the lump in my throat and knowing somehow that it was all going to be fine, and that I am my own person, and so very lucky to witness these moments of levity.

More classic Yanni that i listen to most flights - Rainmaker - awesome.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RvJH_POzxmc

The Storm - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SSrH_oqnrl0&feature=related

For all Seasons - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ynv9pyPr0fg&feature=related

And last but not least - if you do not listen to any other of my YT links - listen to this one. Its just stunning....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RUJa05rxGec

Or pretty much anything off his "If i could tell you" or "Tribute" albums. Check him out.

Yanni is so uncool it is crazy, but it shouldnt matter if its cool - its pure musical genius. Just awesome.  Smile

If not Yanni then something like Vibrasphere, any of the Global Underground series mixes, the Cafe del Mar series of mixes, sometimes some 70/80s prog rock etc.
What do you mean you dont have any bourbon? Do you know how far it is to Houston? What kind of airline is this???

"Fly Me To The Moon" is another. Frank Sinatra does an excellent version, but at times the Astrud Gilberto version works even better.

While we're mentioning Astrud Gilberto, "Non-stop To Brazil" is another good flying song (Even if you're not on a flight to Brazil.).

Then there's that ode to the flight attendant, "Waitress In The Sky" by The Replacements. Play at your own peril.....  Silly

I just saw them live on the Sunset Strip, great bunch of guys. "International Airport" is another one by them that's sort of fitting. Good stuff.

A bit more obscure I think, but "In A Daydream" by the Freddy Jones Band is my favourite. Can't help but think about blue skies and little Cessnas while that song plays...  cloudnine

Oh god, how could I forget!

My Morning Jacket is easily some of the best music to listen to while flying. There is something extremely cathartic about flying at night and watching the lights above and below while listening to some MMJ in the background.

Strangulation
Sooner
Bermuda Highway
One Big Holiday
Wordless Chorus
It Beats 4 U
Gideon
Off The Record
Anytime

And maybe the best one - Dondante

It's actually not Van Halen that did the Top Gun theme, it's Steve Stevens.
