What To Expect On Qantas NZ - AUS

Thu Jul 16, 2009 4:26 am

Hello,

I'm just curious to see what one should expect flying Qantas between New Zealand and Australia i.e Meals, plane type, entertainment etc?

Thanks in advance.

Now that Jetstar is operating domestic in New Zealand, Qantas have put Jetconnect's planes on a lot of TT routes until their 738s arrive. So that means crappy old 734s with barely any entertainment. Once the 738s come, you'll get PTVs. I haven't flown on QF for a while but their meals haven't really seemed to change that much over the years.. Still more of a "plane type" food than what NZ offers. AKL-SYD is mainly operated by 763s - they too don't have IFE. QF operate 738s into ZQN - just the usual Aussie domestic one. I don't think there's much more to it to be honest.

Expect a fairly ordinary product. If you're flying from MEL or BNE to AKL then you'll likely get a 734, which has a pretty subpar onboard product. Even the 767 service is average. I'd go EK if you have a choice. If you're flying from WLG, I thinh there's more of a chance of getting 738s, but even then, ordinary.

Expect a proper hot meal (breakfast, lunch, dinner). Lunch and dinner are followed by icecream. Complimentary drinks including beer, wine, spirits.
Until the end of the year the aircraft are however as others have mentioned a bit tired (734/763) and don't have individual IFE, just main screens. Most Tasman flights are now operated by AKL based Jetconnect shorthaul crews (except a couple of AKL-SYD, CHC-SYD, and possibly ZQN).
56 types. 38 countries. 24 airlines.

Either EK or NZ - both have good products across the Tasman, much better than what QF provides right now. Since QF pulled the 744 off QF25/26 to MEL, they don't really have much of a respectable product; mainly because they treat New Zealand rather similar to a domestic flight (use of domestic configured 763s etc).

I flew MEL-AKL with QF and the service was fantastic. Hot meal, drinks, dessert and comprehensive IFE.

It was on a non ER 744 and the service continued to LAX. I would recommend flying this route with QF again in a heartbeat. Though I do agree that for such an esteemed airline, their 734 product is not the best. If possible, definately try and book on a flight number that continues to the states, well worth it.

the 744 no longer flies trans Tasman for QF , the inbound flight from LAX turns around at AKL and heads back to LAX . I do admit that the 744 was nice , I flew it in March and even though it was the old style sloped skybed it was still very luxurious for the hop across to MEL - although I had to change seats because the TV wasnt working properly , would not have been impressed if I had been on a longhaul and unable to change seats . I am not surprised that they took it off the route though, I was one of only 4 pax upstairs.

I think it was more of a fact of getting the AKL flights to align with QF107/108 to JFK so that people from AKL could do same day transfers to/from New York without having to stay a day in LAX on both legs.

Just want to check, QF 25/26 MEL-AKL-LAX the MEL-AKL portion is on a 734? and the rest is a 744?

Let's not forget that flight to NZ are shorter than quite a view Oz domestic services. I can understand QF's decision to treat NZ as a "domestic" destnation in terms of product, although I'd personally fly EK or NZ.....

correct , until later in the year when the 734 gets replaced by 73H , if I am not mistaken .

What, those being all flights to Perth and Darwin? Qantas just hasn't responded to its competition in a constructive manner. They're light years behind with IFE now that NZ released the PTVs towards the end of last year. It'd be nice to see them send their A332s to AKL.

Indeed, whenever they arrive. I don't know which routes are getting the 73H routes first because there is supposedly an order to which ones get the 73H first..

Expect an ordinary, domestic-style service because it literally is no different to a domestic flight. The biggest aircraft on any TT route on QF is a 767, which in terms of entertainment and comfort is a generation behind NZ's 767s and even A320s.

I'm flying SYD-AKL-VLI-AKL-SYD, all on A320s, in January and am looking forward to all the flights due to NZ's upgrading of the A320.

Broome as well, occasionally.  Smile

I'm not defending QF compared to its opposition products, just making the point that there are Oz state/territory capitals further from SYD/MEL/BNE than NZ destinations

I know, but I do think that QF have got the logic wrong in this case. Many people believe that international flights should be treated differently - NZ has done a lot to differentiate its international service from its domestic one and so their product over the Tasman has never been better and QF is about a year and a half behind in updating their product.

I think that this is at least partly a reflection of the fact that the Tasman is always going to be more important to NZ than to QF . NZ needs feed from 20 million Australians a lot more than QF needs feed from 4 million kiwis . NZ needs to have a good product on the Tasman far more than QF does , and at a time when every carrier is looking to save money it is not surprising ( to me anyway ) that QF does not spend as much money or effort proportionately as NZ in this market .

Thanks for the information guys!

I actually booked a friend tickets on QF from CHC - SYD for late July and I just thought i'd check the information about the service.

I would have booked NZ or EK but QF were alot cheaper so that made sense Big grin
